To cab or not to cab?

/ To cab or not to cab? #71
Although we have tasks that demand a tractor, our schedule is more flexible and we consider our time on the tractor more enjoyable than work.

Works for me!

You are a piece of work.:D

OK, let's take a look at what you said:

No, it's a metaphor and we do work, we just have the luxury of deciding most times when we want to do that work.

No, not true, first tractors do real work, just like motor cycles do real work. There are people who go to work on their motrcycles, use them for economy, second car, etc. Can a motor cycle be someone's fun ride? Yes, but does the motorcycle cop do real work? Yes! Should he get a cab?
It's not that we don't have "stuff" to do it's that we have the luxury when we want to do that "stuff" most times. The few times we have to be out in bad weather is the price we pay for having an open cab we desire the rest of the time.

No, there has to be a thought in your head, not mine. Read above.

Really? While we can pick most times we want to do things, again, because we worked and earned the money to enable us to have this luxury it doesn't mean we don't do things or that our tractors are just toys. I plow my 600+ foot driveway after a storm because I can. (Real work) If there was an emergency and I had to get out I could bundle up with clothes and do it during the storm. This happens rarely and again it doesn't justify the majority of times I don't want the cab.

No, this your perspective. I said to "each his own". You're the one telling people without cabs that they aren't doing meaningful work and just "playing with 4 wheel toys". We acknowledge the professional who needs a cab.

What? I should get a cab for the few times I might get stung by a bee? I've never been stung in five years, maybe next year I'll get stung I better get a cab?
Sounds like if you don't get dirty, you don't work. I have hot water, I take showers and wash my clothes.
I've loaded hay with people using cabed tractors. They get just as sweaty and dirty but they get to drive back to the barn in AC. I'll pass thanks.

Rubbish!
Just because we enjoy our open tractors doesn't mean we don't do work. It just means for most times we opt to have an open tractor and the expense of a cab is not justified for the few times we would use it. Most of the time we wouldn't use it and those times it would be an encumbrance.

One more time, to each his own.

Rob

If you would slow down and read my posts, you would not jump to the conclusion that I am saying a cab is the only way to go. You come accross like it should be the persons choice, yet you will not let anyone come up with a reason for anyone to buy a cab unless they are a professional. Let them decide and listen to why others have or have not purchased a cab. You keep saying, to each his own, but you keep telling me that I am wrong? WTF

One of the reasons I put to buy a cab was the lack of time.

I don't get why you guys are so **** bent on this.

What did I say!

"to each his own"

How many ways do I have to say it?

Do you know that you can't get a 485 BH on a 3x20 series with the cab?

So, you can do MORE work without the cab in that case. What would I rather have a cab or a BH? A BH.

I would rather have a 110 or a real backhoe rather than an attachment to my tractor that is slower, fairly hard to remove and not as capable as the units made as a dedicated commercial back hoe. ;) That is dead serious. My farms backhoe (Case 580) is old and is not cabbed, but it is more capable than anything I could buy for the 4x20 or 5xxx series tractors IMHO.

I know your not comparing capabilities, but I have nover looked at purchasing a backhoe, or replacing the machine we have, with a unit that I would attach to a tractor. Cost wise it might look smart, but I think it would be less capable and take longer to do tasks. I am looking at this from a business standpoint rather than a home owner or hobby thing.

To me, tractors are for work, not play. The only way I enjoy it is if I am comfortable. I spent way to much of my teen years driving a open station tractor row cropping or cutting.

A "real back hoe"? The 485 has 3730# digging force and digs to 8-1/2 feet. That's real enough for me! Plenty of businesses use them, from landscaping to town and village road crews. It's not a 110 but it's not meant to be. I can redo a septic system easily with one and it can be removed in a matter of minutes without tools, plus now you can get a thumb for it.

Comfort is different things to different people. You must keep missing this because you feel you have to constantly defend your position.

"to each his own"

I think you should go back and reread what you initially wrote. You were pretty condemning of people who didn't want cabs. "4 wheeled toys", etc.

Bingo...if you can only work when its nice out, its no better then a Harley, would you buy a motorcycle as an only vehicle? I wouldnt, I like to come work every day, I cant afford to not come into work whenever it rains, too hot or too cold....
I get most of my work done when its miserable out because SWMBO has no jobs for me  ..just the other day I spread 108 yards of gravel because it was "too hot to work in the garden"...It was HOT and MUGGY, I had the cab so cool the mugginess was condensating on the exterior glass, I had to run the wipers every once in a while

For the price of a 485 or any top shelf Hoe, you're 85% of the way towards a nicely used mini-hoe which will outdig even a 110. Heck, I'd like to go head to head with nmu's 580 for the heck of it ;) Again, not exactly apples to apples (Mini-hoe vs Backhoe) but I know when the day comes I need to dig holes, I will NOT even consider a hoe. Its mini-hoe or nothing.

Plus I can buy a mini-hoe with a cab

Hey, I have a tractor so I don't have to make those noises with my lips any more. :D When I was looking for my first tractor, a good salesman told me that if I had to justify buying one, I probably would never have it. Same with a cab I guess. 30 years ago it was very unusual to see a car around here that had air conditioning too, but it is pretty hard to find one without it these days... Tractors are as much for us as they are for the work we do with them, and as such they should please us, and make our time on them rewarding. For some that means a minimum of 50 hp, for some it means a cab, and for some anything they can putter around with, and do things is fine. All of us need to share the happiness that other folks enjoyment brings them just a bit more.......

I said there are people here who own a 3x20 cabbed tractor for ONE acre. I said I think its crazy.

Dave,

I think he's talking to you.
