To cab or not to cab?

For the price of a 485 or any top shelf Hoe, you're 85% of the way towards a nicely used mini-hoe which will outdig even a 110. Heck, I'd like to go head to head with nmu's 580 for the heck of it ;) Again, not exactly apples to apples (Mini-hoe vs Backhoe) but I know when the day comes I need to dig holes, I will NOT even consider a hoe. Its mini-hoe or nothing.

Plus I can buy a mini-hoe with a cab

Dave,

"to each his own"

The Case 580 is a big bucks commercial machine. What's the cost of one of those? Where would I put it and what would I do with it when it's not in use the one time a year or more my 485 hoe won't do the job. A mini hoe? No thanks, I'll take my neat little tractor that does 97% of what I need and call an excavator for the other 2 or 3%. I figure I'll save in the long run. Hey, how many times a year do I have to go below 8-1/2 feet? Come to think of it, I've never needed to go deeper than that. I got a NEW hoe with thumb for about $8,500.00. Take it off when I don't need it and it stores in the garage. Don't need two machines or the headache of a used one that was used commercially. I'm covered.

Me, I wouldn't own a 3x20 tractor for a couple of acres but not only do I understand your desire for one, I'll defend it as I did elsewhere on this thread.

What a lot of pissing and whining. I don't have a cab. Boohoo. Poor me.

We feel very fortunate to own a tractor. The Fel will pick up 1200#. I have gotten a lot of work done with the tractor, WORK that was next to impossible without it. Would a cab be nice when it is windy , cold and I have to plow? Of course. Ac on a hot day? Ditto. Gentlemen I have a budget. The cab was never on the table. $5000 so I could be clean and comfortable every time I went out on the tractor? That was not going to happen in this household.

This is the same equation when we buy a car. I would love the Turbo, the heated leather seats, the bigger motor, the Sport suspension package, the 6 speed tranny, [ what else can I have?], but at some point we all have a budget.

So please, enjoy your cab. Be happy about owning a tractor. But stop with the trying to prove how stupid people without cabs are. It's BORING.

Hmmmm,

5 grand for a cab
spread out over - say 10 years

about $10 per week
or about a half case of Yuengling.

Tradeoffs.

Dave,
"to each his own" .

Absouletly!
Thats precisely the reason they make cars & trucks of various colors, styles, types & sizes

I got a NEW hoe with thumb for about $8,500.00. Take it off when I don't need it and it stores in the garage. Don't need two machines or the headache of a used one that was used commercially. I'm covered.

Taking into consideration your "To each his own", the entire problem of a Hoe to me is the cost... for +/- 10k I can be into a nice used mini-ex. I'm a tinkerer, and I dont mind projects. I wouldnt have built my own power rake if that werent the case. My dad has a hoe on his Kubota L2900, so I'm "covered" in that respect, but at the same time, both of us and my bro, all say we'd never buy another hoe. Not that it doesnt work good, they work GREAT, but for the money you can buy alot more machine for only a few bucks more. Again, thats just for us. Thats not a solution for everyone. To be fair, when we bought that hoe (Kelly B20) it was +/-3k new, at that point it was a no brainer. Now with hoe's costing what they do, to me they've price themselves out of contention.

Me, I wouldn't own a 3x20 tractor for a couple of acres but not only do I understand your desire for one, I'll defend it as I did elsewhere on this thread.

LOL, I prolly shouldnt tell you what I use to cut the grass then
I come from a farm family and further then that the entire area is commercial farming...everybody has at least one tractor. Heck my FIL has a JD Dozer to putter around his lot....that in addition to his 2 mowers, 1 CUT, and whatever tractor he's working on (buys/fixes/sells as a past time hobby). I'm actually designing my new garage to be 4x20 cab compatible...not thinking of sending the 3520 anywhere, but just in case...

Just for the record...some people may think there is a lot of arguing here in this thread. I personally dont see it that way...we're all having a spirited debate! Kinda like shootin the breeze with buddies and having a few beers

Again, did you read what I wrote? I said there are people here who own a 3x20 cabbed tractor for ONE acre. I said I think its crazy.

I own a 4400 (35 Engine HP, 30 at the PTO) for 2.5 acres...most of that machine's work is mowing one acre.
You got a problem with that?

But stop with the trying to prove how stupid people without cabs are. It's BORING.

I guess I really don't understand why guys would even care what others own. I sure as h3ll don't. The only thing I can figure is they're trying to justify their spending the money (more to themselves).

You got it Roy, I'm just happy to see people loving their tractors regardless what they spend, how much land it works or what configuration they have.

I would have a problem with that Roy if you had one of those E-hydro things, but since you have a real transmission, I'm good with it.

LOL, I agree with you on our first statement, but I look at it the opposite on your 2nd statement. I look at it as guys who don't have a cab justifying why their tractor doesn't have a cab. :D As I said earlier, having both, you can keep your open station, bugs, wind blowing trimmings in my face, dirt, freezing temps, heat, rain and snow. I'm too busy to wait for the weather to be perfect before I use my tractor. My tractor is put to work in all weather conditions while the operator sits in 72 degree comfort listening to my favorite XM channel. :)

In most case, I'd guess it's a cost situation. A farmer or other Ag occupation that requires 4 or more hours a day on a tractor on a regular basis sure needs some type of protection from the elements and the extra cost of a cab is easily justified.
We residential owners (maybe better described as recreational users)...then it's just if you want that cab...not that you need it. We're not obligated to spend the 4 or more hours a day earning our money on that tractor (so we can take multiple breaks).
Would I buy one? Doubt it...but I buy my tractors used, so what comes with 'em, comes with 'em. Heck, I surely don't need a 4000 lb 35 HP tractor (and a 7 FOOT freakin' mower!!!!!!!) for my little spread ...but that's what came with the sync-reverser transmission I bought.
