To cab or not to cab?

ROFL.
All smokin & jokin aside, this has got to be one of the most entertaining threads to both read and participate in. :D

Absolutely!!!! Been fun watching this. That said I really enjoyed spreading fert on my sunflowers (dove hunt) with my fathers 4720 cab. It just started raining and it was hot. Wouldn't have been so enjoyable on the 4310 of mine. But He has 75 acres and I have 5.

 No I don't have a problem with that:D If you actually read what I wrote, I said a 3x20 series for taking care of a house on ONE acre is crazy (to me). People can buy and own what they want. I used my 3720 to take care of 20 acres and mow the outside of about 200 acres of field. I think its too small for that, so I have a 4520 on order.

I think its funny how you say the cabbed people are justifying thier purchase. I dont need to justify it, I absolutly love it and would recomend it to everyone. It is what it is. I also like my Fords, and many people don't, but if your looking for a truck and ask my opinion, that would be my answer.

Hold on here! You keep saying go back and read what I wrote and I quoted you in several places where you absolutely ridiculed people. Should I go back again and show the group what you said? It's you who has the problem many of us on both sides have been saying whatever fits you, get. That hasn't been your position.

I don't have a cab or canopy on my tractor. I use my hat and spf 45 long-sleeve fishing shirts to protect me from the sun. I don't get sunburned, but boy do I get filthy. Are there times when I wish I had a cab? You better believe it. Not because of the sun, but it would've been nice on several occasions to be able to go somewhere and not have to get cleaned up first.
We have two properties right now. Live on one and planning to build on the other, which I'm cleaning up right now (the reason I bought the tractor) and is 45 minutes away.

Like others have stated, If I had a cab, I could definitely work longer days. I wouldn't have to cut my days short because I was going some were. Snow is not an issue for me. It froze maybe two days (30 degrees) last Winter, and **** WAS I COLD.
Will I upgrade to a cab? No, I need my money for other things. Besides, my property isn't conducive to a cab at its current state. I do see the advantages of having one though.

30...... Thats summer time temps here... OK not really, but I would not even plow snow on a 30 degree day since the sun would most likely melt it if it was only a few inches. When the cab is the best to me is went its 0 degrees and a north wind at 35mph, plus we have 12 inches of snow to push. We get that for about 2.5 months out of the year. We also get lake effect....

Texas weather rocks and I hear its a great place to live!

YESDEAR,
Thats a nice 4720 of your dads! You don't see many with R1s. I plan to add 2 110 wheel weights per wheel to mine. I have not found anyone who has added weights to R1's in that seiries.....

NO, I was not talking about Dave......

FYI, out 580 cost us about 14K about 7 years ago. I know it digs deeper than 8.5 foot as our neighbor borrowed it to finish digging his daughters basement when the excavator he was using broke. I know it sucked for him, but it worked. We use it to work on Field tile and to keep out ditches clean. Most of our fields have a tree row and a ditch around them on one side. We have to keep them clean to keep the tile working or irrigate going. I think a 485 would be too light for the job.

If we would have the conditions we have in the market now, I would own what Dave is talking about. A mini x would do more work and be more versatile, but they were more expensive back then. This is another engine to maintain, but our farm does not have many tractors, and what we do have is paid for, so a bit of maintenance is nothing and expected.

Everyone has needs and opinions, and it comes down to that.

No again!

It wasn't about backhoes, the reference was to your statement that you think it's crazy to own a 3x20 on one acre. (Actually I think Dave has a couple)

As far as backhoes, now you go back and read what I wrote. I said for me the 485 would do more than I ever needed. Geeze, you do lose track of yourself!

nmu98 Thanks. It is a pleasure to run. The R1s were a bit of a slip up when ordering. He wanted the R4s, but now that they are on there I am glad it happened. He wants to either load or get weights. Also to widen the stance. Not sure which is the best way to go yet.

I would not live anywhere else, but maybe Alaska (but only during the Summer). Went there for our honeymoon. Beautiful place. But I do want to visit everywhere else....one day.

sldva00,

Are you going to need to put the money saved into some pontoons? Looks like some of the areas are flooding.

Working in Hondo, last year prior to getting the cab tractor I was coughing up mud. That can't be good for you.

jenkinsph,

Fortunate for me, both my places are high ground. My wife doesn't think they're high enough though. Just went through Hurricane Alex a couple of weeks ago, then tropical depression this past week.

I've enclosed a picture from our patio during the hurricane. This is as high as the water got. It covered the boardwalk, but that's about it. I guess it might have been higher if we had a direct hit.

The money saved is going towards our first born. He is due in October:thumbsup::). I set a budget for the tractor and stuck to it.

I've had em both and I will never ever drive a tractor with out a cab and air and heat.

Nope, been there done that and a cab is one of the few things that will make your life just that much happier.

Pros and cons:
Cons - cost a lot of money.

Pros:
Bees will not attack you ( I've had that happen )
Dust will not cake in your eyes, nose, mouth, sweat we've all had that.
Keeps you cool in the winter doing snow ( I don't know how some guys get out in a snow storm with no cab.)
Keeps you cool in the summer ( that's a no brainer )
Keeps you dry in the rain.
Keeps the noise down.
Keeps branches from taking out your eye balls.

I could go on and on but I think you get the point.

I rented a CAT 305.5 CR mini-excavator last Saturday and it came with a cab. No AC, so I had the door and side window open since it was a 90+ degree day. Even with the door and window open, it was so much more pleasant than an open station excavator. No dirt blowing in my face, no wind buffeting, no crud on the drink cup. If the excavator had AC, and CAT offers it for that model, I would have closed the door and window and been a happy camper.

That was a nice machine to operate.
