Replace two whole assemblies?
Post some pics.
What doesn't look so hot?
I tell ya that video I bought of Shawn's off ebay is really good. He is working on one for the whole baler. I need that one now.
D.
I'll price the assemblies versus the parts. But, given the lag time up here to get anything; especially when you really need it -- I like to have extra's on the shelf!
The top pinion gear that rolls over when the knotter ties has a "bevel" worn on the flat faced surface - that's not good. The owner's manual says that if the knotter is not consistently tieing that the surface can be flattened with a file and that will get it working again. Only a short term "fix", though. Would need to be replaced, soon anyways.

You need to order this video - well worth the money.
Top pinion gear - not sure which one that is. Twine disc, bill hook or at big discs with gears on it?
D.
Use JDParts.com and it can price parts out for you. I just spend $350 on knotter parts. New bill hooks and cam gears, knifes, wiper arm bearings, etc.
D.
I "invested" $450 in parts before I ever left SoDak.. not including a new tire! You still got a ways to go - to catch up with my "investment"!!
AKfish
Heck that was just knotters. I have $850 in parts so far. I am going to return the hay resistors - the ones in my parts baler are good.
D.
OK... I gotta ask.. are you paying the list price on JDParts? It doesn't matter much - anyway - 'cause I always pay list at my dealer. I feel ESPECIALLY grateful if they don't tack on some kinda additional freight charge!
Some I did, some i didn't.
I'm having the part's guy "run the numbers" and let me know what the assemblies will cost and I gave him a partial list of the other part's that I want to have on hand in my garage. I'm pretty sure I'll go with just the key elements of the knotter assemblies - individually - 'cause the whole enchilada will be more $$ than a new baler..
-----
That is exactly why I asked.
Had a measure of "success" tonight. We baled up 3 bales with "recycled" hay from the barn! YeeHaa! :drink:

That is awesome.
I think we missed this current weather window for hay; so, I'm hopin' that we'll get another shot of sunshine in a week or so.
AKfish
I am hoping to roll up 100 acres of hay this weekend.
D.
Well got 154 rolls. Now I need to get them out of the field and move some cows around.
D.
Dang!!! How much do you 'spose the bales weigh? What's that work out to for yield/acre?
You plan to let the cows pick a while on the hay field? A couple of weeks after baling, let the horses or cows, (goats, sheep) on the hay fields for a month or so to graze the new green growth.
AKfish
Not sure on the weight, I will run a trailer load by the truckstop and check.
On the front pasture 2.5 bales an acre (best yet).
Only 1.1 per acres on the back.
Why the difference?
I ran short on fertilzer. I was targeting 200lb acre and well those fertilizer buggies are never right. I had a tender brought out and was filling it myself.
1.54 bales an acre average.
I can live with it - have enough for my herd, etc.
I did notice this morning that I tore a belt on the baler. I thought I saw a cedar stick in one of the bales when I drove by. That mulching of tress last year did throw some debris into the fields. Sucks - that was a new belt last year.
Always something...
D.
I'm guessing those bales are your 2nd cutting this year? And if they're in the 1,000lb range (ballpark) --- well, that's about what we get for the ENTIRE summer!!
So, that's pretty darn good in my book!
Yah, I shorted my field a bit, too. The back half is a little thinner than the front field and the edges are kinda skimpy. I'll order an additional 1,000 lbs next year.
AKfish
How much fertilizer are you putting down per acres and what kind?
D.
Local JD part's guy quoted me $1,221.40 for a knotter assembly for a JD336 baler!! Have to add in another $25 for sales tax.
Don't guess I'm gonna "invest" $2,467.80 on the 2 assemblies.. Ordered the 2 twine disc pinion gears for $42/apiece. They were the worst worn parts.
AKfish
(He did mention that he "might" be able to come off of that by 10%.. and I did remember to be "civil" when I declined!)
