I have a model 1720....1991....I bought it used last year and everything worked, or so I thought.....I just bought a bush hog today and I cant get the PTO to sync.....it will sync with nothing attached....Low fluid or bigger problem?

Anyone with some knowledge on the subject?

Thanks...........Sean

It isn't a fluid problem. It sounds like a clutch out of adjustment or worn out to me. When you say "sync" do you mean it won't shift into PTO or that once shifted the PTO won't turn to drive the cutter? You have a 2-stage clutch. Does the pedal have 1/2" to 3/4" freeplay? I think the PTO portion of your clutch is probably slipping. I don't have any direct experience with your tractor so maybe someone else will more complete advice.

Sean,

did your PTO ever worked since you bought the tractor? did you ever use any implement that used pto before? does the gear grind when you try to engage the pto?

with the engine off, engage the pto manually, start the tractor, with tractor in neutral, your foot off the clutch pedal then, does your pto final shaft turn?

if it does, then clutch all the way, does your pto stop?

What exactly do you mean by not synching? do you mean grinding or not pto shaft turning.

post back and we'll try to help. I hope as jim said your clutch pedal need adjustment.

This is the first PTO driven implement I have tried to use since I bought the tractor.....

Specifics........

The PTO will engage with no problem/noise without any attachment....Once spinning it sounds like all the PTO's ive heard.

Once I install the implement, the PTO wont engage. It makes a grinding sound.

I'm guessing that it is clutch related, but my lack of experience is showing.
I dont have a manual to refer to.

There is a small plug right behind the seat. I was told that that is the fluid fill....It is dry as a bone.....

I need to know if this affects the clutch and then in turn my problem.
Also how do I check fluid levels.

Thanks for your help

on 1720 pto is not independent with a hyd clutch pack. it is live wit dual stage clutch. there is nothing hydraulic/oil related with your tractor. small plug behind a seat, can you take a picture of it, On my 1700 I have a breather cap and not an oil fill. You said it is bone dry, how did you figure that? any dipstick? visual? your hyd system and transmission uses the same oil, bone dry and you have both transmission and hyd pump issue? on my transmission fill plug there is an integral dipstick that you check oile level. you are talking two different issues. Do the test as I suggested in my previous post about clutching, half clutching, pto rotation and report back. Your pto clutch disk might be bad or your final pto shaft coupler may be chewed out. I have to check with your model, I think you have an internal ORC (Over runningclutch) that might be busted. some owner had issues with ORC and ended up changing it.

JC,

my dad is with the tractor, and says that the tractor wont start up with the PTO engaged....I do have a question.....there is a secondary foot pedal just below the brake.....That wouldnt happen to have anything to do with the PTO would it.

So does that mean the pedal below the brake is the PTO clutch?
