The little peddle by the brakes is probably your differential lock.

Maybe it's your method of trying to engage your PTO, not having a manual and beings first time, could happen.

Push clutch all the way to floor or as far as it will go and keep it there,,,,slowly ease PTO lever in,,,,do it slow, gears need a few seconds to spin down and line up.

Also, I have been told to always have engine at an idle when engaging PTO.

So does that mean the pedal below the brake is the PTO clutch?

which one is it? pedal under the clutch or brake. if it is on the right side it most likely is the gas pedal (you can rev up the engine). On the left side I don't know. you might take a picture and post. I do not own 1720 to know all the differences, but they share a lot of common stuff. As Rick said, a cheap $20 plus IT service manual or owner's manual can answer some of the basic question.

do you know how a single clutch system work? with dual clutch like you have there is one assembly with 2 clutch plate and two pressure plates that work as a unit. they share a common clutch pedal, push the clutch half way and it disengages transmission and all the way it disengages PTO clutch.

The basic is really need to be learned and understood, and memorizing it is not adequate.

JC,

I went back and looked at onother post you made, you probably have a pto safety switch the keeps the tractor from starting when PTO engaged. start it normally.

Nobody knows everything:) The key is to know enough to be dangerous:D

The little pedal is the diff lock......I think that my clutch is probably worn.....I appreciate the help......I'm going to visit the local dealer tomorrow to purchase a operating manual, and a service anual......If this is more than a adjustment, how much am I looking at......

I'm not sure if we figured out what is wrong with your pto yet. it will be pricey, as the double clutch part by it self will be close to $1000 and the labor to my estimation is 8-12 hrs as the tractor needs to be split.

You have a 2 stage clutch. This means there are 2 clutch disks. One for driving the tractor and the other for driving the PTO. From not being used your pto clutch is probably stuck . When you push the petal 1/2 way down this stops the movement of the tractor. When you push the petal all the way down this disengages the pto clutch. If you have too much free play in the clutch petal it wont disenguage the pto clutch totaly. The service manual will explain how to adjust the clutch properly. There are ways to free a stuck clutch but you have to have things adjusted properly before trying them.

Well I just left my farm...I got the PTO to engage....It wasn't easy.....quite a bit of grinding, but it did engage.....Didn't sound normal.

Looking at the pedal linkage....it looks like a simple adjustment to increase the throw of the pedal....I just ran out of light.

I hope the manuals i pick up tomorrow will explain this procedure.

I sure hope this is all i have to do......spending 1K on a tractor that I only paid 4K for doesnt sound right....Oh well.....JC the tractor does have just over 2000 hrs on it...

And buy the way.....Tractor supply doesnt have manuals for any Ford tractor built after 1940....in case you needed to know.....

Sent my wife.....boy that was an interesting phone call
