Most recommendations I've seen call for a minimum of 20hp at the PTO. That usually means about 25hp overall.

Depends somewhat on what you cut, and how fast you want to drive. If the tractor's engine is bogging down, you'll have to slow down or only use 4 feet instead of the full 5' width... I use a 5' with 23 hp but I only cut in the winter, when it's dried out... only time I have to slow down is going up hill.
If you plan to be cutting thick grass or small trees, again, take smaller "bites" or go slower.

The rule of thumb is each foot of width requires 5 Hp at the PTO as a minimum, not engine hp.:thumbsup:

I've got 25 or so at the PTO for mine, and unless I'm cutting saplings, I can pretty much top out in low range without any issues in weeds beyond the top of the hood

I would rather see you use a 5 foot flail mower with grass knives from caroni.
My dad had a 6 foot JD flailmower with grass knives on his Ford Jubilee with no issues at all, I wish he had not sold it years ago. your 9N will breeze with a 4-5 foot flail mower with grass knives.

I have a B3030 that I use to pull a 5 foot Bush Hog through areas with tall (6 plus foot) sapplings and typical field growth. The tractor is rated at 23 PTO HP at 2600 RPM. When I am bush hogging, I run the tractor at 1800 to 2200 RPM and it gets the job done with ease. I do not have a HP/torque curve for my engine so I don't know what the PTO HP is at these operating RPMs.
