I have a bearcat 554 chipper/shredder on my Ym240. When I move the tractor with the chipper attached I have been closing the stop valve to keep it off the ground when I move it. The book says "do not close stop valve when transporting implement". The slow return valve is in the slow position, but with this chipper on it I still have to keep stopping and lifting the chipper up with the control lever. I don't lift it too high because of the center of gravity issue. What I'm wondering is- What damage have I done, and could it be I need to look at the hydraulic cylinder, piston, O-rings? Thanks, jbrd

Some Yanmars, my 2002d for instance, when you set your lift handle at a height you desire, the lift will maintain there, in other words, if your cylinder does leak a little, the control valve will sense it and raise it a smidgen. I would have thought the 240 would do that. I'm thinking some 240 owners will respond. I'm thinking you should be able to open your stop valve, put lift handle at desired height and go for it.

I have the YM2000 which is the same as your US. Ym 240 only difference basicly is you only have 2 PTO gears and your Throttle works opposite. I had the same problem when I bought it. What I did to correct it was just changed my HYD. fluid and had to replace the filter/screen. you should be able to just clean yours mine was Getto rigged big time :( I believe it's 4gal. JD 303 or equivelent. After I serviced it still leaked down but nowere near as bad. If you look in the pic. on the left side of the valve closest to you can see the adjustment. If the pin is pointing back It will leak down. Mine is in the middle straight up now and it does not move. Just make sure that the finger to the valve with the spring attached stays snug against it. Inn is up and Down is away it could be getting pushed back. I shortened my spring to make sure that didn't happen. You can put a knob and lock so your handle doesn't go past that point so it won't lower any further than that point

"with this chipper on it I still have to keep stopping and lifting the chipper up with the control lever."

If you have to do this because the lever is dropping, you only have to tighten/replace the friction washer(s). If the lever is not dropping then you will have to look into the areas you mentioned.

I thought that was the problem when seen the parts Diagram and I was missing everything so that was on my Grocery List. After I installed a new Washer and Spring it still did it. That is why I had to tighten the Spring to the Valve. Still had alot of play in the linkage and that stopped the finger from moveing away from the plunger.
That fixed it for about 3yrs. now no problems with my BB or Tiller. I can't even remember the last time I had to close the Stop Valve. Was expecting the worst and having to go to the piston like Tractor Ernie mentioned. Didn't look like all that much to it if i had to but like the old saying If It Aint Broke Then Don't Fix It ;)
