Hi guys,

I have a 1957 IH 300 Utility.

It was rated for 33 hp at the pto.

The tractor is approx. 6 ft wide.

It is all original and a little tired.

What width of a 3-point tiller would you guys recommend?

Thanks for the help.

Jeff

You'll probably do OK with either a 5ft or a 6ft, but I'd suggest the 5 foot size. I've found that the horsepower demand is not as much as one might expect. Your IH 300 should have enough power, even if it is a bit tired, but it will also depend on your soil conditions. Heavy, wet clay will demand more power than light sandy soil, for example, and breaking new ground is harder than tilling ground that has been worked previously. Rocks, roots, etc. will be a problem - be sure you get a tiller with a slip clutch.

You might find the 6 footer a bit heavy on the back, requiring some front weights to keep the front wheels down, particularly if you are going up hill.

You can get 60" models that can be offset so they cover one of your wheel tracks. Unless you have a lot of ground to work, the 5 footer will work just as well as the 6 footer, and they are cheaper as well.

I am in the Missouri Ozarks and you don't get much soil with your rocks!

When I built my pole barn, each hole was a differant make-up of soil, clay, gravel, etc.

I was actually thinking about a 48" tiller for all the reasons you stated.

Also I was considering tilling 4 foot and leaving 4 foot, so the 48" might be a better choice.

Would plowing be wise and try to pick up the bigger rocks before tilling?

I will be working up about 1/2 acre.

Thanks
Jeff

The rocks will definitely slow you down. In fact, you may find your biggest issue is whether the tractor can gear down far enough so you can run the tiller through all the rocks. The rocks will bounce the tiller and the tractor, and sometimes jam in the tines. You have to stop the tiller, raise it out of the ground and make sure it's not jammed. Unfortunately, often as not, the tiller then proceeds to re-bury the darn rock so you get to hit it again next time. Any rock that's the size of a grapefruit or larger will get caught up in the tiller like that. Lots of rocks, lots of stop n go. I think you'll find it easier to run at fairly low rpm.

Anything you can do to remove most of the rocks will make life much easier. If you have the option of plowing and picking as many rocks as possible before tilling, it will help a lot, I'm sure. I could certainly understand going to a 48" tiller to make it just a bit easier... sounds like you have some ground that will not be friendly to the tiller, or to you!

I had a 300U for 15 years. I never tried to put a tiller on it, because I did not think that the tractor would go slow enough for a tiller. As far as the hp, it is more like 38 hp @the pto. And possibly quite a bit more. Most of these tractors have been rebuilt at least once. And usually with oversize pistons. As far as the weight, it weighs well over 4K. Mine with a loader and wheel weights was over 6K. And the tractor will pick up a 6 foot tiller with no problem. It could pick up multiple 6 footers. You will need the adaptor tongs, to go from the fast hitch to a 3 point hitch. If you need a set, I can give you a really good deal!!! If you put a loader on it, you will need power steering. Without a loader it works great. I'd still be using mine if the crank hadn't busted, tearing up the block, rods, etc. I still got good money out of it - the guy that bought it parted it out and probably made a small fortune. Hard to get some parts for these old girls.

Mine has power steering and appears to have had a loader at one time or another.

I had to replace the hyd. pump a couple years ago. (not cheap)

The biggest issue is the splines on the steering arms are worn out so the steering is sloppy.

Oh yeah, and it's not too pretty to look at, but neither is it's owner.

Speaking only for my self here, but your IH ain't the only tractor whose owner looks a bit rough around the edges.
