I have a 2000 e450 with the V10. It gets about 7-8 mpg but that's in a 17000lb motorhome towing a Saturn. Good power never had a mechanical problem.

My uncle has had 2 V-10's. One was in 99 F-250 4x4 Short Bed Extended Cab. He pushed snow with it and pulled a 15,000# boat for 6 years with zero issues. It had 4.10 gears.

He now has a 05 F-350 SRW 4x4 Short Bed Extended Cab. He uses it for pulling a 25,000# boat 2 times a year about 60 miles. It has 4.30 gears. Again no issues other than 5 mpg pulling that load. It averages about 11 mpg.

on the ones spitting spark plugs.. what was the head material? aluminum?

seems I remember my mom having a lincoln product that spit out a plug and had to have a head replaced after having the head rethreaded once at the dealer. ( both repairs under warranty ).

The V10 in the SD's is called Ford's Best Kept Secret by many owners on Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Basically the power of the diesels without the special handling and maintenance diesels require (Yeah, I know - not exactly, but close enough for arugments sake). In 2005 Ford went to the 3V heads and they have a substantial power boost over the earlier versions (on the V8 and V10 - the 3V V8 had about the same power as the 2V V10). Spark plug spitting was a problem with all of the modular series engines up until about 2003 when Ford changed the head design to add more threads to the spark plug port. I forget the exact year but I think 2003's and beyond were good for that problem. All 3V engines don't have the problem.

Ford's modular Triton engines from the 4.6L to the 8L size have aluminum heads. These engines have had problems with failure of the threads in the plug holes. Both overtightening and undertightening can cause the threads to fail (undertightened plugs rattle in the threaded hole and eventually fatigue the aluminum threads). There are several fixes (inserts) and some folks have started small businesses to service those unfortunate Ford owners who have encounted this problem.

i had a 95 w350 swb/dually v10/5sp

it was a lot of fun.

14 empty (and trying to squeeze every drop) 8 towing. those are imperial gallons though, times .8 for u.s.

after having a couple of cummins i doubt that i would go back, but i certainly don't regret the experience.:D

One of my co-workers bought a used '01 (I think) Dodge 4x4 with the V10. He likes everything about the truck except for the fact it won't pass a gas station.

The V-10 is very strong of the line Sound Guy. Most had 4.10 gears and some have 4.30 gears. A few got out with 3.73 gears but are not very desirable. 05 and later models got the 5 speed torque shift tranny and a major HP and TQ improvement when they got the 3 valve heads.

Matter of fact my Nissan Dealer has a nice used F-250 regular cab long bed 4x4 with a lift and the V-10. I was going to buy it last weed until I checked the axle code and found out it had the 3.73 gear. I passed. They have some of the specs wrong on the web site. It said it had a 5.4L and 4.10 gears.
