John Deere 850 electrical mystery

Reading other forums, I've learned that it might be the cable or connection from battery to ground (I've checked that by bypassing that cable...which didn't change anything.)

If you checked it by clamping a jumper cable on the terminals you haven't eliminated the post-to-cable connection. Agreed with others - start clean there.

Once you check that get back with us. Helps the professionals and us guessers hone their skills. many times we see threads like this then never know if the original poster found what they needed or not.

Thanks so much for this advice. I've ordered a new starter/solenoid assembly from Yesterday's Tractors for 1/3 what local dealer wanted for a remanufactured one and will replace the whole unit. Let's hope that does the trick!

Good Call Rick. like I stated before I may have just haven been lucky and was able to take my Starter apart. Honestly I thought it was THROUGH with all the Dirt and Brush Dust that came out of it. IMO. with good clean connections and cables it will work for yrs. to come.

Thanks for this advice, Carey. I installed a brand new starter/solenoid and still, no go. If the lights are glowing brightly on the panel (temp, etc), does that mean that positive and negative cables are OK?
I cleaned a mouse nest out of underpanel area but there were no exposed or disconnected wires. From other members' posts, I gather that voltage regulator doesn't affect starter circuit...so I'm stumped!

PS Are you anywhere near Athens, GA? I've spent some time in that enjoyable city.

Carey from GA has suggested that I replace cables from battery but I can't figure out how to get into the area where they're connected.
