Ok dummy girl question...Tractor fliuds..

I know Hydraulic oil goes in the filler holes located under/seat...
Gear oil goes in the bush hog "chunk" thing
What goes in the 'box' where the gears are? I was told Hydraulic fluid...
What is the difference between hydraulic fluid and oil? The tractor is no longer moving very well..bogs down when the bush hog has to work harder..Please help..New to tractors..but my 80 year old father can't get on the tractor anymore.. I tired to find info in the posts but alas...

It is a Long brand farm tractor.. I don't know what model ..It is old and has been worked on a good bit by 'somebody' wires everywhere..zip ties etc.

i think it is hydraulic fluid. Im pretty sure thats what i got in my tiller and auger gear boxes.

I'm sorry ..Please be more specific.. light weight like car motor oil 10w30 or something? It appeared to have hydraulic fuild in it..it was very low..couldn't touch it with my finger (haha).. I put hyrdraulic fluid in it.. What is the difference between hydraulic fliud and oil?

sorry, i was mistaken. Yes, hydraulic fluid. Yesterday i had to buy some 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid for my tractor. Sure is spendy stuff. is there a dip stick on the tractor? when you put hydraulic fluid or oil in a tractor, dont fill it to the top. When it is heated up from running the tractor, it will expand. This expansion (if the tractor is filler to top) can blow out seals which add up $ quick $.

when i put hydraulic fluid in one of my tractors yesterday, i luckly had the manual which states exactly how much fluid it takes. its amazing my little tractor holds 4.5 gallons!
