As it sits inside of your hand, and your hand is now further away from the weld, and I tend not to look through the palm of my hand when welding I don't see how it is hard to see around.
Certainly does not work in every instance, but there are very few welders I know that can produce a faultless smooth 6" bead without showing a ripple where they advanced the rod in their hands, so, yep, guess it is a crutch.
Nice. Not for production use though. I have seen TIG welders feed TIG wire with one hand as quick as any machine. TIG welding, of all, is the weld most pleasing to the eye. The TIG welders feed with one hand so as not to have starts and stops in the weld.
