Concrege aggregate - round vs crushed?

pea gravel is usually used when the concrete is made to be pumped through a concrete pump...

In order to pump concrete the mixture must have a low enough slump to go through the pump and hoses...to keep the mixture strong and still maintain the low slump they add portland which in the end makes the pour harder than concrete that did not need to be pumped...

Exposed aggregate would be awfully ugly without it.

A good example is to take a piece of crushed limestone aggregate, put it on a slab of thick steel and smack it with a small 3 lb. sledge hammer. You'll get dust. Try the same with a pea gravel river rock and your metal will ring and you'll maybe split the rock at best.

Another regional thing I guess. All of our crushed stuff is basalt, not sure how the strength compares to limestone.

But our cement has to be some of the best. This is near Portland, Oregon....;)

I don't know how to break this to you, but Portland cement is actually named after the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. And, the name is based on the similarity of the cement to a natural stone found there...

I already knew that. But Portland, OR is named after Portland, ME, which is named after "the" Portland in England. :D
