I'll say it again, that she is the student and I am the teacher when she is paid to do a job, is a crock. No qualification needed.

It kills me to go to one of the "fast food" parts stores and ask for stuff and they look like idiots. I messed with one of the(off the street ) kids one day and asked him for muffler bearings. He couldn't find them on the computer and told me to try the competition.

Parts people are initally trained to be capable of searching and invoicing the parts system, it is their years of experience that allows them to cut through the search process and through past sales knowledge go directly to your request.
And I will say it again, you too lack detailed information in your original post (she has been doing parts for ten years?) which was not included.

I say go volunteer in the parts dept. and see what that system is like. Lots of Deere parts are flowing in the system. And when doing some work in a Deere dealer's parts dept, some of the most frustrating ones are the old-timer parts guys trying to work with the new (but outdated) computer systems that they are forced to use. No simple answers here. Deere has a pretty darn good parts system all in all.

And isn't it a "crock" that one can go to jdparts and find the number for that filter ring.

:D

I agree those people are rare and are a dying breed. Before computers it was quicker to remember the parts, now it is easier to just look them up with the keyboard, plus now there are a bazillion (yes I know this is not a number) more. Just too many other facets here to respond to. Chalk it up to devolution. BUT, there are still very skilled people behind the counter that can help just as fast because they have learned the system/tools.

Part number changing is a big frustration of mine. What all the companys need to learn is keep the part number for life. Doing this will make it so we can have some great parts people in the future like we have in the past. When a company keeps the same part numbers I am more eager to buy from them as it looks like they got it right the first time.

I needed a new wiring harness for my 1949 Farmall C a few years ago. Went to the than IH dealer and the parts guy walked in back and pulled out a new harness that was in stock.

I said she couldn't remember what parts she needed to get with a list of them in her hand. How you got from point A to point Q without passing anything in between is really beyond me.

But wait.... the parts girl's ineptitude is my fault, you not being able to read is my fault, that I didn't elaborate enough about something I didn't say is my fault..... honey dearest, did you find me on TBN and create an account just to pester me?

Naturally! if you hadn't needed the part, you wouldn't have asked for it and wouldn't have embarrassed her when her incompetence was shown.
