The 62c on the X595 and 60" on my 445 were pretty good mowers but the underside of the deck had too many baffles, rivet heads on other obstructions that allowed for the clippings, sludge as I call it, to accumulate. If one is able to mow when the grass is bone dry it is less of a problem but there still is accumulation. If you mow with the slightest bit of moisture the sludge accumulation is worse. It really has to be cleaned after each mowing.

The 7 Iron deck is a wide open design. The accumulation of sludge is mimimal. I took the deck off to sharpen the blades a month ago and I had about a half of a dustpan. That was the first time this year. ON my 62C I would have had 3 scoop shovels. It is amazing the difference.

I believe the quality of cut is a little better as well. The 62C does a good job but I believe the 7 Iron is better.

I have also heard exactly what TCowner posted about the decks.. I hate how the grass builds up under my 62d deck..

Builder, I use my 7 Iron on the edge of my property. This is a grass/weed area that I get to about every two weeks. So with the 2 inches of rain we've been getting every week since the first of June the stuff is about 6-8" when I mow. The 7 Iron handles it just fine.

This stuff is almost 100% water. My 62C would be spitting out sludge and plugging mowing this stuff especially later in the evening. I usually don't get home from work until 6:00 pm or so I do alot of work after supper. It's not unusual for me to mow right up until dark. The 62C would be just about plug. The 7 Iron has been mowing under these conditions and almost no build-up. If someone had told me that a mower wouldn't accumulate the sludge I never would have believed them.

So yes, I think the deck more than capable of handling light commerical work.

Builder,
Following this thread with interest, I am looking at the X748=749 models too.

In my business we try to make repairs to the lawns that can cause problems when mowing, smoothing, filling holes and tapering edges. I would assume you do the same and with that in mind these mowers should hold up longer without damage.

I think I would prefer the 4ws as this greatly improves the manueverability but this discussion of the 7 iron deck is interesting too.:D

How about the X748 itself? Tough enough for light commercial?
Tough enough for full on commercial. A number of landscapers use the series around here.

Bummed out that the 7-iron can't be used with 4WS. :(

What specifically is the problem with the 7-iron and 4WS?

Cause they say you can't use the 45 loader with 4WS too but all it takes is grinding the one mounting bracket to fit.

The specific problem is that the tires on the 4WS models hit the front edge of the 7Iron deck when turning - the overall size of the 7Iron deck is larger than the 48/54/62X decks that we use with the 4WS models.

You are correct about being able to mount the 45 Loader on the 4WS units (I have had a few customers do it) but the reason Deere does not "allow" it is not because of the bracket interference (as that is very easy to overcome) but the safety issue of a tight turning 4WS tractor with a full loaded bucket, all the way up in the air. Yes, most of us know that moving and turning with the bucket all the way up is inherently dangerous - but it is still done on a daily basis.

Ah. I guess that'll be what makes the X8xx series special then. :)
