X series drive over decks??

The 400 was replaced by the X400/X500. They added 4wd. The X400/X500 was replaced with the X700. They added the ability to have 4wd and 4ws at the same time. When they replace the X700 with the X800 they'll add 4wd, 4ws, and 7iron at the same time. Just a guess....

That would be nice - but I have yet to hear anything along those lines, I do know that we will not see a major redesign on the X700's this year.

One thing I wish they would offer in the future is an optional ROPS.

Just keep the ROPS optional, PLEASE!. That's one of several reasons I chose the X748 over the 2305 last year. Mowing under overhanging branches is bad enough. If I had a ROPS installed the tree trimming required would be ridiculous. I like the bottom branches of my ornamentals where they are.

You asked earlier about how tough the X748 is. I used a 445 before. I also push snow at work with one that has weights & chains. My X748 puts it to shame, and it should for what they charge for these things. The 4WD makes a huge difference, and these are heavier machines. If you are mowing a rough area, I would highly recommend the SE edition with the Michigan seat, or at least buy the seat and put it on your self. Parts of my yard are very rough (yes, I'm trying to decide how I want to execute a renovation there) and the seat makes a huge difference for me. Also, I saw in an earlier post that the front fenders on the SE edition won't work with the 7 Iron. Not true, at least for the '09 model. I don't know if it's changed, but I believe that poster was addressing the '07 model.

The 7-Iron is worth every penny. It is very heavy duty and mows just as well as the Scag Turf Tiger and the Grasshopper 729 I demo'd in damp grass before I made my purchase.

I think my only gripes thus far after 1 1/2 seasons of use (including pushing more snow than SW Missouri has seen in years) would be the top speed at full throttle - maybe a high range for road travel would fit the bill - and the hydraulics could be a bit more responsive when manipulating the blade under heavy load. Of course, it is a hydro tractor and that pump has to work four wheels, too.

I have no regrets. My Step-dad has the X749, which I have not personally used, but I have no use for the four wheel steer. It's probably nice once you have it, but this thing turns great and I'd much rather have the 7 Iron.

I wanted the 4ws real bad but now that you guys have praised the 7iron so much I'm not really sure anymore. Not like I can't get anywhere I need to go with the X475 and its neither 4wd or 4ws.

Anyone with 4ws think it is more likely to tip over if turning too tight on a slope?

OK, I found a 748 with a 7-iron already on it, but I don't know if it's a drive-over deck. I am going to find out the details monday.

Kansas Slim,
One thing I was concerned about was the clearance issues with the 7-iron. Even with the deck fully raised, I am concerned it wouldn't be more than 3-4 inches off the ground.

Anyone know if there's adequate clearance with deck raised? The 8 acres I'll be mowing is kind of damp & bumpy in places. Concerned about scalping, but need the 7_iron to keep the deck from clogging.

Check this link for some pics I posted last year when I got it. http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=99735 The ones you may be more interested in start with entry #14. My yard is still pretty rough, and I do have areas where the tractor dips on one pass, then dips the otherway the next pass, so you're left with a different cut hieght. Purely a function of my messed up yard, but we're getting there. There is less clearance since the deck is deeper, but I have not had any issues of having the deck hang up on me...except that one time I was in the ditch! I shouldn't have tried to cross that sharp a dip just to cut a 2 foot area! But the diff lock works great! Just stomped on it and backed right out.

I have not had any issues with the machine sinking into wet areas (of which I have a couple). I think the tire size/weight distribution works out pretty good. I do take the deck off for gravel work/snow plowing. It's just too easy.

As for the deck you found, I don't know if the 7 Irons designed for the Z-turns have the same mounting points or not. There should be two hooks on the back that the draft arms slide into and the hooks in the middle of the front where that the U-shaped hangar bracket mounts. If the ramps are not mounted above the outer mower spindles where the rear tire drives over, I'm sure they can be purchased separatley, as long as the bolt holes are fore and aft of the spindles where the ramps actually mount. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think there is such a thing as a 7 Iron designed for the tractor that is not a drive over deck. If the ramps are gone for some reason, replace 'em. Mine also has a metal shield near each rear hook to help guide the draft arms into place and keep them from hanging up where they are not supposed to. I'm not at home looking at it right now, but maybe you can tell from the pictures.

p.s. There are also more deck pics on entries #16 & 17 if they happen to be on the next page of the thread for you like they are for me.

Edit: Checking to see if you had responded, I noticed that you found a tractor with the deck, not just the deck. My mistake. As I mentioned, if the ramps over the spindles are not mounted, I'm betting you can just buy replacements. There should also be a piece of iron welded onto the leading edge of the deck in the wheel tracks so that the tire has a place to grab on to as you back up over the deck, and a piece of bar steel welded to the deck over the discharge chute that sticks up a couple inches and serves as a right rear tire guide as you back up over the ramp. It all works pretty slick. The bar can be seen in the pic where the tractor is backing over the deck and the leading edge pieces are easily seen from the pics of the deck standing up.

The specific problem is that the tires on the 4WS models hit the front edge of the 7Iron deck when turning - the overall size of the 7Iron deck is larger than the 48/54/62X decks that we use with the 4WS models.

You are correct about being able to mount the 45 Loader on the 4WS units (I have had a few customers do it) but the reason Deere does not "allow" it is not because of the bracket interference (as that is very easy to overcome) but the safety issue of a tight turning 4WS tractor with a full loaded bucket, all the way up in the air. Yes, most of us know that moving and turning with the bucket all the way up is inherently dangerous - but it is still done on a daily basis.
Now how could that be? Do the front tires on an AWS machine turn tighter than a 2WS machine? Or do you mean the back tires?

Well define front edge of the deck, tractor engine compartent front, or rear tires front, if that makes any sense
