I recently fabricated a log lift for my log splitter and used 3/8 inch hose for the 2x10 cylinder I used. I had to add a flow control valve to help with the speed of the cylinder since without it, it was uncontrollable. I installed the valve and adjusted the flow but now it wants to stall the motor at times. Any advice regarding the installation of this would be helpful. I am using a 10hp motor, all 3/4inch piping except for what goes to the new cylinder.

restricting flowwithout diverting flow is not working on constant flow systems. We have had a Loooooong thread about that......you need to "throttle" or "feather" with your control valve together with the restriction.....
If control valve (spool) make full travel to end, the pressure relief valve, PRV, will by pass excessive flow at max pressure = Max power...
Sounds like you don't have a two stage pump???

Thanks for the reply. It is a two stage pump and if I feather the control lever it works fine. Is there anything else I can do so that I would not have to feather the lever to get the lift to work smoothly?

you can make an arrangement to mechancally limit the travel of the spool in the control valve...how is the log lift designed? lifting wift capped side of cylinder?
how is cyl hooked up to the ctrl valve?

What flow control valve did you use?

And if running the cylinder all the way out, but holding the valve lever on, will it also kill the motor?

If so, sounds like a relief valve isn't working.
