My vote would also be for the 57 Chevy. Ken Sweet

It was designed after Studebaker and Packard merged and it looks like they kept the Studebaker designers.
The rear deck looks to have a little bit of Chrysler Imperial mixed in.

Don't understand the attraction to the 55 to 57 chevys, especially the 55. Don't do much for me, maybe because they were/are still common. For a fifties-era timeless North American design, it doesn't get much better than this. Introduced the year I was born.

My parents had a '56 Packard Clipper that I thought was a beautiful car. Wish I could have it now.

Just curious, why?

I guess it would be hard to explain, but it's strictly a personal "feel". I've driven quite a few of each of those 3 years, both automatics and manual transmssions, and always liked the "feel" and handling of every '56 that I drove, but the '55s and '57s tended to feel stiffer and a bit more awkward handling with a stiffer shifting, if manual.

Now there was one thing lots of us didn't particulary like about the '56, and that was putting the gas in. How many remember the gas cap being under the left rear taillight? And if you were not careful, gasoline would shoot back out the rear when the tank was nearly full. Even the gasoline pump's automatic shutoff didn't help a bit. If you used that, you'd have a pint to a quart of gasoline shoot out behind the car just as the nozzle shut off. Working in a service station, I learned to listen carefully and could tell by the sound when to stop or drastically slow the gasoline flow.

Of course I've driven all the Chevrolets built in the '50s (with the exception of some year model corvettes) and the '55 and '57 Chevrolets turned out to be the most popular, but while I agree the '57 was the best looking, I'd rather drive a '56 than either of the more popular '55 and '57.

My first car was a black and yellow 56 four door. Loved the gas cap behind the tail light and the huge space the thing had. Hated the automatic transmission....stepping on the gas was just a suggestion to go.

Chuck, my first car was faded green 1946 Chevrolet 2 dr. with 90+k miles on it when I got it. Dad gave it to me for my 16th birthday and paid $75 for it. It looked like this except mine wasn't 2 tone:

Even the V8 was slow with automatic.
If I remember right, those "poo-poo glide" transmissions were just 2 speeds and it was almost like taking off in 2nd gear.
