Is there a brush hog, that can handle 2" dia saplings, and mow my 4 acre yard? Or do I need to invest in Finish Mower, and Brush Hog?

Pasture grass, yes. For my yard, I use a finishing mower. If you keep the blades real sharp I suppose it would be possible.

If you want a nice looking lawn, you won't be satisfied with the job a bush hog will do. If the look of a hay field recently mowed is to your liking then a bush hog will do fine.

Yep - need both. Using the brush hog for the yard is sort of like getting a hair cut with a meat cleaver, it would work but it sure aint pretty.

:thumbsup::laughing: That's funny, but true!

There are a few guys around here who might even suggest a flail mower. I've never owned one, but I hear they do a decent job, and can go through a bit of brush also. Expensive, but maybe cheaper than two mowers? :confused:

Any takers on this info?

Check out medium duty flail mowers.

Medium duty flails like the Caroni TM1900 can handle both brush and lawns but there are some compromises. 2 inches is manageable but not as a steady diet. Clearing land that is 3-5 years over grown works well with a flail but a whole field of 2 inch saplings would take longer with a flail than with a medium duty bush hog IMO. Once you know those down, the flail would easily provide a better cut than a bush hog . Comparing a finish mower to a flail is more complicated. A flail that can rough cut well will not give you quite the cut that a finish mower does. For many of us however the flail cut is fine.

Think of the flail as the middle bubble in a Venn diagram. It does most of what the finish and bush hog combo can do but at the extremes the specialized cutters have an advantage. Still, as you can get a medium duty flail for under 2000 delivered, it is much less expensive than owning both the finish and bush hog.

It depends on how nice of a lawn you want. I have, once or twice, mowed the yard with the rotary cutter, especially the steep hillside we have. It looked pretty good, but of course won't look as good as it would with a good finish mower. My issue has been more that the bigger tractor with ag tires will mess up the yard when it's soft.

I would get a flail with 2 sets of knives. One set for finish mowing and a set for ruff cut.
