Rotary Cutter Can a brush hog handle saplings and mow grass?

This thread brings back memories of a cutter that Big Bee once made. It looked like a Brush Hog, except it had 2 wheels in the back and a anti scalp roller in the front. It ran a "High Speed" gearbox, It was built to do exactly what this thread is discussing, however, the product did not sell all that well and was discontinued. Ken Sweet

Too bad. Only Woods has something similar with ther RM990, with swinging blades on 3 spindles. I really like the idea but I'd want something a little smaller (like 6'-7') if I were to purchase something.

I don't agree, I'll see if I can post some hog pictures of my front yard when I get home.

I had a RFM, and had some "Garden", "Lawn" - "tractors", they are all gone now. Only the hog remains........
and my trust craftsman me-propelled mower....... :)

I think the issue is not so much whether the bush hog can cut grass to look kinda like a finish lawn but rather that bush hogs are typically used to cut grass that is much higher than what we cut with lawn mowers. As the bush hog rotary type mower doesn't mulch, it leaves "hay" all over the place. If you mowed with a bush hog every week that would not be an issue.

Well it really depends on grass conditions, yes, BUT, it also depends on how you perform the cut. I certainly cannot afford to spend more than two hours doing a cutting session.

I guess once you "tame" it, and get into a timeframe that you can live with, all I am saying is the bush hog can do a fine job.

The bottom line for me is that I saved my back changing implements (the bush hog stays on until winter snow arrives) and I don't have the incurred costs of two 52" cut "garden mower" laying around, nor the RFM anymore.

And believe it or not, the tractor was purchased with a MMM PTO, I had every intention of purchasing one, tried the RFM, then stayed with the bush hog.

But, yes, your right, factoring in conditions and time.

I forgot to say, so far this year with the bush hog, I have mowed my back pastures twice, and the front four times.

This is the setup for the pics to be supplied later.......:)

It's called drought in my area.

Here is the front. Right side, "lawn" Left side , "hay".
Right side, bush hog, Left side - tons of money......:)

Interlaux, my cruise does function. Haven't had the need to try it, though now I am looking forward to seeing how it functions with something on the back. Looking forward to start mowing. Sorry for the delayed response. Getting all the honey-doo's in before I get back to our property, and I give my two mowers a try.

SW Mich - you have been busy! that JD 609?(ntbm) RC wow wow wow! 4" ADVERTISED CUT!!!!, custom JD gear boxes, double deck OMG:thumbsup:
hope you get your draft issue fixed - I do not have draft sensing - maybe it could be disabled? **** warning I'm crossing RECENT posts****.

PLEASE make sure that used unit has the slip clutch and the flex couplings working right. I see you've knowledge about the slip clutch - what about the flex couplings?

Have you moved with the finish mower yet?

One thing I'll say about my cruise is to FULLY DEPRESS FORWARD pedal and then hit the switch to turn it off to cut corners or slow down. Yours maybe different - it might be the last gen magnets

Mow on Bro!
