.
. Yes I had to cut out that area to gain access to the rear portion of the pin. I did manage to weld all around it and I used the long portion of the welding rod to get at the far most portion of the pin and when the rod got shorter I used it on the closest side of the pin. Hey what ever works hey  thanks for your comments guys.

One more question from the unskilled. It sounds like you had to blind weld the other side of the pin through the hole that was cut out. How in the world can you do that without seeing the puddle, the arc, or anything visual?!!

I know you have a great deal of experience but is there a hint to pass along?

To tell the truth and I know you will laugh at this but I have actually practiced welding with my eyes closed for situations like this. Once you get used to the rate of speed and know your machine you can lay down a pretty good bead.

Another thing that I practice is to weld while looking in a mirror. That's a skill that has been very handy for me in the past. Ya I'm a weirdo :)

You're a weirdo if the definition is "professional, caring, quality sensitive, and innovative."

More "weirdo" folks in all walks of life would make the world a better place. Thank you for sharing as an example for us all.

Thank you very much my friend. I don't know if I fall under any one of those categories but I sure appreciate your kind words. What I do is nothing special but having forums such as TBN gives us all an opportunity to learn from one another and to share ideas and have a little fun in the process. It's kind folks like yourself that keeps me coming back here.
