Quick question about turning with brakes and Hydro trans.?

A common theme in tractor selection here on TBN over the years, has been to try them all. Kubota, NH, JD, Kioti, and the rest. Demo or rent a few in the size/class if you can. Then make a decision.

Some good points made by everyone and thanks for educating me. I guess it all just comes down to personal preference. When I do bite the bullet to purchase a tractor I'm gonna try to keep an open mind about how each manufacturer sets up they're respective operator stations.
Thanks guys.

I am not too impressed with your dealer. While I know farming methods have certainly changed, many people still need or want steering brakes on their HST. While I no longer have any need for them, I do recognize their utility and doubt any tractor manufacturer can get away with leaving them off anything other than a SCUT. I wouldn't buy one without them.

Triple R, I don't disagree with you on having turning brakes, I started out on a 8N, and know the use of them. Around here, most buyers are suburanites, and only mow and use the FEL, maybe a tiller. The dealer knows his base well and is a great dealer. He has a good fleet of demo's, a big area to work them out, has good prices and a good service dept. The reason I like Kubota is that when I go by the dealer the service guys are doing more setups than repair work.. All models have their strenths, just have to find the one that works for you. Myself, I was going to get a HST, till I tried a shuttle shift, was like a natural fit.

I try not to be disrespectful and perhaps should have used different language. In my opinion, your dealer should have qualified his information to fit your needs and those of his other suburbanite customers rather than using such a broad brush to include all HST's. It gives the impression, at least to me that he doesn't know what he is talking about.

As I have said previously, I presently have no real need for turning brakes on an HST, but want that option. You will also notice, I own more Kubotas than anything else.

I don't care for having the split brakes on my B2620 on the same side as my hydro. I have used both the cruise control, and awkward foot manipulation to make it work, but it isn't handy, and after using tractors with usuable steering brakes most of my life I sure miss it. If Kubota would change the cruise control so it can be used to speed up, or slow down the tractor like it does on the deluxe B models it would be an acceptable compromise. My cruise requires the speed to be set by the hydro pedal before it can be engaged so is pretty useless for using with the brakes in short areas like some snow removal tasks, etc.. Works fine out in the wide open spaces though.
If I ever buy another tractor, the brakes, and 3pt control will be a factor in choosing it for sure!

Dad had a McCormick 10/20 when I was little and they had no individual wheel brakes, or if it did, they didn't work, and I remember him pulling a disc and took forever to make a turn. The next one an F20 was a tricycle type and it had a handbrake on each rear wheel, and also an automatic cable system that worked when adjusted right. Then came the B JD also tricycle type with foot brake on each side. The individual brakes on these tractors was almost a must have, especially in the mud and cultivating corn, at the end of the row, lift the cultivators and spin around and catch the next row. On those tractors, the front wheels would turn almost 90 degrees. Now the 4WD tractors that I have used, they're not so helpful. I've used a Kubota 7500 and tried to turn with the brakes and all it did was follow the path of the front wheels and drag the braked rear wheel. The 855 JD also did the same, was awkward using left foot on the brakes, but I suppose I could get used to it if it was useful. Used the brakes on an IH 1066 2WD on a side hill pulling a Mower conditioner, also needed on Ford 4610 2WD. The McCormic 95 with 4WD mowing the same field, didn't need the brakes, also drags the braked wheel and won't turn shorter than the front wheels will turn. Using 2WD, I think they are handy and needed in some instances, not so with 4WD. Just my observations, flame away.:D

I have heard that if Kubota owners wear a short skirt and ballet type slippers, that is easier for them to cross their left leg over the right leg and mash the brake pedal of choice...I'm only repeating what I overheard don't flame me!!!:D:D:D

ps, if anyone has a picture of Kate Beckinsale doing this, I would love to see it.

I love these threads.

Looking at this thread again, and thinking of the many that came before, makes me wonder...

Anyone ever write or email Kubota and tell them this?

They sure aint gonna change it(brakes/HST) cause we whine about it on a web site forum...

Oh yeah!, well I heard that that the reason they put brakes on the left so you JD owners would not get your "panties" in a wad with the leg cross thing!:laughing: so there! My dog is better than your dog!, and my dad can whip your dad too!

Well, now that this has degenerated into a "panty vs. tutu" thing I am not sure we are going to impress them with our thoughts.:D:D

I am not convinced that the majority of Kubota owners want the brakes on the left. If this is however the case, I agree contacting Kubota would be the way to go.

As mentioned previously, I have one with brakes on the left and literally hate it.
