What size hyd. cylinder do you guys think it would take to crush an old steel car rim off the old tire .. ? Any one want to help me build one ?

What kind of tire and rim are you referring to? Pictures maybe? I have one of these bead breakers. Uses hyd to push the bead off the rim either on or off the machine.

what I had in mind is a hybrid between a Q.A. inverted log splitter and a comercial wheel crusher like the scrap yards use
The log splitter similar to marhams/gators Gator Attachments Wood Splitter or WX400 Series Wood Splitters - Wallenstein
And the wheel crusher similar to TSISSG | TC-350 Wheel Crusher | Tire Service Equipment | Saf-Tee Siping & Grooving wheel crushers from Northern Tool + Equipment
I am unsure has to how much force is needded to sufficiently crush the rim to allow the tire to be removed from it ? do you think 20ton? or bigger ?

Back a few years ago I saw one at Turner Hydraulics, Carlisle, PA......they built one for a customer....IIRC they used 3 hyd cyls (5 or 6 in bore cyls) facing each other shaped like a Y......they had it rigged up to set tire/rim in center of the Y formation......when ready the first cyl (in the bottom of the Y) extended out and squashed the rim....when pressure reached a predetermined amount, the cyl would hold and a sequence valve would then swap the pressure to the other cyls (top of the Y) till they crushed the rim to look like an upside down V......

It only took seconds to remove rim from tire.......I believe the customer was a scap iron dealer separating for scap iron......

You are probably not too far from Carlisle, PA if you need more specifics..

Steel wheels are pretty tough, it will be interesting to see how much force is required to crush them. Good project.

I overlook that 54000 lbs force ...thanks for catching that:ashamed: I definitely Have a use for both crusher & splitter as I burn about 12-14 cord a year & I'm getting tired of swinging my 50lb splitten maul

a friend of mine, a few years ago talked about a "clover leaf" type crusher like you described... they rented/leased at the scrap yard where he worked , He said they cycled rather fast and it was back breaking to keep the machine fed & off loaded
I'm sure this type allows the tire to come off easier than the " log splitter" type crusher
I have started to collect the parts to build. I'm going to try using a 4.5" x 2.25" x 26" Hyd cyl as I've one in stock & use tractor hyd +/- 14gal/min./3000psi... I guess all I'm really building is a tweeked log splitter on a QA set up

Local JY has a "locally built" rimsplitter such as you are looking at. It has a 6" ram with a 2.5" rod. The wedge moves and the other end has a "cradle" shaped plate that it pushes against. The unit is powered by a 4 cyl carburated engine out of some car pushing a hefty looking pump. IIRC, it has a 10 gal hydraulic tank. Never seen it working, but I have walked by it a few times.

this past weekend i bought this off craigs list and came w/extra vain pump used, new valve, new 4"x36"x1.75" da. hyd. cyl. the splitter itself had been sitting out for a while ...so the wisconsin motor pictured is siezed anyone need parts from it ?b4 it goes to scrap yard?
The splitter otherwise works I hooked a drill motor up to the pump manly to see the condition of the hyd cyl and it the piston was clean. Well this is a start, nice buy for $300 bucks

Most of the scrap yard splitter/crushers will do tractor trailer rims ... most of mine are 15" or smaller ...1/8" steel we will see if a 20-25 ton cyl. is going to do it .. other wise I geuss I'll just double my hyd cyl up to GET ER DONE
