Well, I apologize for taking your post the wrong way. I quit dairying on the family farm in 1986. I'm currently watching a couple guys I grew up with deal with the mess that has become American Agriculture. As you know, it ain't pretty.

Don't sweat it brother. Unfortunately, the family farm a lot of us grew up on is a thing of the past. One of my dairy farmer friends told me he has no clue what he would do if he ever had to quit farming. It's all he has ever done. I'm afraid if not for his kids, he would put himself on the wrong end of the shotgun.:(

I disagree with that. The family farm is plentiful around here. The problem is few are willng to make the sacrifice it takes to make it happen.

Probably because the price our farmers are paid for their milk is based on the Wisconsin market. We were getting over $18 a hundred in 1984 and around $12 today. You tell me how they can survive around here.

And you get paid more then we do.

Nobody is getting $12 today unless possibly if they are on grade B which if that is the case they deserve to fail.

Th family farm is plentiful but few are willing to make it happen....seems somewhat contradictory.

You are right.

I should have said that if they are not plentiful in that area then few must be willing to make the sacrifice.

Wow, you seem to know a lot about the dairy industry here in northeast Pa.

For much of last year, you were below $12 a hundred.
Monthly Data - All Milk Price

Prices are still infinitely below what we were getting in 1984. Adjust for inflation and dairy farming would be profitable again.
