I was looking at some trailers today and the PJ seemd to be the nicest out of what I saw. The pricing is a bit higher though. They want $3060 for the 18' dovetail and $3025 for the straight flatbed. I am a little concerned with the dovetail dragging a bit at the end of my road but it would probably be nicer to load and unload with the 5' rotary mower on. Do these prices sound about right? I have not found another dealer close enough to go look at. The other 18' trailers I looked at did not seem as heavily constructed but were around $600 less. This is my first equipment trailer so I don't know much about the differences between brands other than what I have read here.
Does the dovetail make much of a difference when loading and unloading with the mower on?
Thanks!

I do not like the Dove Tail personally. I like to have a flat deck totally. Is the trailer with the DT going to be big enough with it for your load?

As for pricing its regional. I can get trailers for 2/3 the price the folks on the east coast. It all comes down to destination charges. Most trailers are made in the Midwest and the South so you others suffer.

Thanks for the reply Chris. 18' is pushing it with the mower on but will work. I had it on a 16' once but the tail wheel of the mower was hanging off the back. What's interesting in their pricing is that to go from 18' to 20' in the flatbed is an additional $250 and to go from 18' to 20' on the dove tail is only $90 more but the 18' flatbed is less than the 18' dove tail. Not sure why the pricing works out like that. And yes, we do pay higher prices here in the PNW for a lot of things. Fuel in particular.
I have a sloped area that I can probably use to help with the load angle on the flatbed and then don't have to worry about it dragging at the end of my road.

I think Chris is right on the money. However, I would go flatbed and 20 feet.

I travel to the PNW quite often for work so I know what you are up against with steep drives and such. I also have family in southern Washington just east of Mt St Helens in Trout Lake.

I would second the flat deck, not the DT. As for length and weight capacity get what you can afford looking ahead to future needs. Bigger tractors, ect can make your new trailer worthless.

Thanks guy's. I appreciate the information. Guess I will go back and look at the 20' this week. Wish I had a way of hauling the tractor down there and loading it on both to see the difference.

We looked at the PJ at a trailer place in Spokane Valley (eastern washington, I-90 and barker exit). We did like the high price, but liked the features. The salesman did not really know many answers to our basic questions, so we headed down the road to Post Falls, Idaho. We stopped at Fox trailers (not far from Cabelas).

We ended up buying a Fox 20' with 5200lb axles, electric brakes on both, etc. Very nice trailer, built right there. Trailer empty is under 2000lbs so we can haul 8000lbs. It is well built and we like it.

Price was right and we support local jobs.

What was the price if you don't mind my asking?
I am along the I-5 corridor so can shop between Portland and Seattle. Portland is a lot closer though. I like to support local too. I called the only trailer place in the town where I live and the guy was going to get me pricing "tomorrow" on what I was looking for. That was over a week ago and I still haven't heard back. As a small business owner, I am more inclined to go with a company that provides decent customer service as that is what has kept me in business for so many years even when there are lower priced options out there for my customers. Price and distance are important but I don't mind paying a bit more or driving a little farther for someone that stands behind what they sell before and after I buy from them.

Do you mind if I ask what you paid for your trailer? I am in the market for one as well as I am going to be buying a kubota this week.

I just bought a 18' pj with brakes on both axles 5200 pound axles. 2 5/16 hitch and dovetail. I paid $3100.00 out the door. I have a kubota 3130 with box blade and it fits just right on the trailer.
