Old saying..height of nest divide by half and that's how much snow you'll get this winter..better keep those snow banks blown back. ;)

It looks like a hornet nest.... better whack it repeatedly with a stick to find out.

HEE HEE!!!

Time for everyone to fess up.... how many of you, as kids, poked the tiger, so to speak, by tossing a rock or stick at a hornets nest?

I remember a very large one hanging over my grandma's driveway about 25' up and day after day wondering what would happen until the pressure was just too much and I couldn't take it... so I tossed a couple rocks and hit it a few time. The rocks would disappear inside the nest. The hornets would buzz and nothing bad happened to me. So I found some bigger rocks. Then bigger rocks. Then the mother of all rocks. WHACK!! The branch broke, the nest came down, the hornets came out, I ran, the hornets chased.... 4-5 stings, a lot of ice and tears and a lecture from mom followed. And besides that, grandma couldn't get out of her house through the front door. They made me go out with a garbage bag after dark and scoop up the nest quickly and fill the bag with RAID!

I learned my lesson.... next time I used a slingshot!

This month I turn 60 and will wait for snow to remove the nest! :D
Of course, my tractor turns 6 months old and who knows what the grandkids will do!:laughing:

the nest does look like a black hornet's nest but the insect on the nest appears to be a yellow jacket....they usually build in the ground but not always...

The larva (worms) inside make fantastic trout bait...especially when the water is a little muddy from storms...

Hey Moss how about a video showing your stick whacking style on a hornets nest so we can learn the proper technique. I would hate to do it wrong and end up maybe hurting one of the little fellers. :) :):):)

What you can do now,,is invite 3-4 people over,,,tell them you got a fun thing that many can do,,give all of them a small bucket of throwing rocks,,get up to 5-6 ft of nest,,everybody start throwing rocks,,nobody can move till you do,do it about 3-4 in an afternoon.,,fun ,,fun,,fun,,,than when you take off,,everybody runs, etc, etc,,,we used to do that actually for,,,,fun....
