beginning of the end for some local dealers??

Yep, Walmart is "decluttering" by reducing the number of items sold. Elimination of slow selling items, reducing choices, etc. It's supposed to reduce costs and prices by having less inventory to manage. Also, wider aisles and lower height shelving gives the store a more open look, plus gives a longer field of vision, supposedly makes shoplifting more difficult.

When Wal Mart recently opened thier store here in rural Minnesota....they stocked it to the brim with lots of sporting goods, hunting stuff, automotive, and so on. Little by little they reduced many items they carry....just like the local stores had.....to "0". They simply need a market for some of these goods too....and the markets are slim out here in the hinterland.

Then too....this economy doesn't allow many discretionary dollars to be spent for some of these goods.

It's gonna get interesting.

We've lost 3 lumberyards here....only one real lumber yard left and then the big box stores.

By the way is it just me or has Wal Mart drastically cut their inventory. Our locat huge Wal Mart recently went through what they called a chain wide remodeling but now the Isles are twice as wide and the shelves half as high and product half as deep on the shelves. It looks more like a massive inventory reduction under the guise of remdeling if you ask me....so I don't think it is just lumber yards or tractor dealers...You fellas seeing the same thing ?

Brin,

You are correct about Wal Mart.

This is a link to an article on CNN Money that talks about their new look and how it might be changing back...

Funny thing about walmart is that they dont own anything in it. Everything is on a consignment and they dont have to pay for it unless it sells. Unlike alot of dealers that have to actully have to buy all the items in thier store.

Yep...that's the trend for some time now. Been a phrase for a long time too: use "OPM"....Other Peoples Money. But that is often the case in some of the smaller stores today too...such as quick marts (I think).

The manufacturer's and distributors are forced to provide the inventory and do the re-stocking in many cases....the seller takes their margin...and pays the vendor. Nice program for everyone I suppose....if you can afford to play the game.

Using other people's money approach seems to work well for some. I was interested to see how Classic Manor Builders who I just used did this.

CMB gets 50% upfront which permits them to buy the lumber with the customer's money and then they only play labor, commissions, etc after paid in full so they have the cash in hand before any required payment by them comes due. Of course they had to become an established company for this to work with strangers over the telephone.

Zero money costs gives any company a huge advantage over others who have to borrow.
