As I look at various CUTs in the 35 HP range the JD 3x20 series quickly comes to the forefront...along with Kubota L series...xx00 and xx40.

One question I have is track width. The 3x20 series appears to be quite narrow...minimum width listed as 40.6" for the 3x20 JDs and 60"-65" for the 35-40HP Kubota's xx00 and xx40 series.

Stability is important to me and it width seems to be pretty important to a tractors footprint and stability? When I look at a 3x20 series at the JD dealers it does actually look pretty narrow...to a fault??

Am I seeing this wrong OR is the JD 3x20 series really more narrow than its competitors? Maybe JD did this on purpose...I don't think I need a more narrow tractor...at least up to a point.

Your thoughts??? Thanks...still learning...Tom R

I've had that foot print on my 4300, and it is not too narrow. Very well balanced on slopes, IMO. Narrowest with r-4's I suspect, and the Ag tires/rims can be turned for wider stance.

The frame size and stability works very well for me.

Here's a copy from the 3x20 Owners Manual for R1 Tires also a link to the manual. It's towards the end under Wheel Spacing"

With R3's or R4's the wide measurement is around 58"

I also don't understand the effective difference between "minimum" and "maximum" track width? The specification pages all seem to focus on "minimum" track width?? How do "most" run their tractor?...and how are they set-up from the factory? DO you lose anything by running at max width?...other than getting between limited spaces?

Again...is my observation incorrect? ie; is the 3x20 series JD a more narrow footprint tractor than the comparable Kubota Lxx00 and Lxx40 series???

AND...isn't width one of the important factors in stability?

Thanks...still learning...Tom R

There are several tire options for the 3x20 series tractors. Many of these tractors are sold with R4 Industrial tires. The width of the tractor with THE BIG R4's is either 58" or 60" depending how you position the wheels. The tractor width is set up to use 5' implements (60" rotary cutter or 61" loader bucket for example). I think you will find comparable widths in the other brands.

foggy,
While several tire sizes are available the 17.5/24 R4 is for the 4xxx series. That is what I have on the 4520 and 110tlb which are both set up for approximately a 72" overall width.

Don't want to confuse the new poster.

Then is it the 4xxxx series or is it the 4x20 series? Don't want to confuse anyone :D
