Oh no! yes I have beaver in one area. they are young I believe because they are chewing small branches for their dam I believe the neighbor shot the adults.

Still have not made the tire decision yet. Of course as we discuss this, yesterday I pushed a stone through my jeep tire on a gravel road. I am sure I was driving too fast.

R-4's don't work real well on wet hills. Get on a side hill, and they'll take off sliding and greatly increase the pucker factor. I'm not that impressed in snow either. Our next one will have R-1's. I don't care if they tear up the grass while turning.

I have R4s and I think I would have prefered wide R1s. I've only had one flat and it was a 1" beaver stob punching through my right front R4. It now has a boot inside and a tube. One thing R4s do is work better in sand. I had a buddy get his tractor with R1s stuck in a creek bottom in deep sand. I was easily able to "float" on top of the sand and pull him out. Both tires have their advantages. You just have to make a decision and run with it. Both are good.

I have used both R4s and R1s on similar sized machines. The R4s are better wear wise especially on hard surfaces but the R1s provide better traction due to the tread design. I wonder why nobody has come out with a mix of both. :confused2::confused: I have r1s on my Yanmar and havent got stuck yet. My Dads JohnDeere has R4s and it has been stuck quite a bit. What i wish on the R1s is because they are so narrow, you loose that extra ground contact that the R4s have. But the traed design on the R4 looses the traction of the R1 because of the strait bars in the tread. IMHO, i would get the R1s. :)

Actually since The R4s are better for FEL work, why couldnt you get R4s on the front and R1s on the back? The tire size for the R1 tires on the front are 7.4x14 and the R4s are 25x8.5-14. Unless i am wrong, this is a possible solution. I have seen some TYN tractors with this configuration before.

+1 on that, last 3 tractors R4 first tractor R1.. I just could not stand the damage. But as to sidehilling, I think I would rather have a wide R4 than a narrow R1. Of course plowing, or mud,, R1 for sure. but that said, I spent almost 3 hours pushing and backdragging wet soil, more or less mud up hill last night, never got stuck, spun a little at times. and so steep only the seat belt kept me in the seat. all this with R4 tires.Life is full of compromises, but it is loaded R4's for me.

I think that, universally, the R4s are smaller in dia than R1s on a given tractor. A mix is then very unlikely to match the 4wd ratios close enuf. The R4 fronts would be being pushed by the larger dia R1 rears. A real handling issue. ... darn.

Hello, I have finally made the decision to purchase a 2010 New Holland T1530. During my "tractor 101" process. I had made the decision of what ever I purchased would have R1's since the traction is suppose to be better. I don't have to worry about a lawn since this is vacant land. It is hilly and has wet spots. I will be using the the tractor for brush hogging and small loader and box scraping projects. When I went to the dealer I saw the tractor has R4's on it. I mentioned to the dealer that I thought it had 1's and I was concerned. He said if I wanted him to swap them out to R1's he would no charge. He also said he felt the R4's would be better for me since they are wider and a heavier ply. Yes they may mud up easier the 1's but the advantages were with the r4's. I realize the r1's are more expensive so was he more concerned with his cost or my needs?

What is your opinion?

Thank you.

About the only reason I would run R4's would be if I was on my lawn....a lot. You say you don't have lawn and that the land is "vacant." Points to R1's.

If you do go with R4's you may find that you need chains in some situations. Me, I don't want to deal with chains so, it's R1's for me.

I get excellent performance with R1's in snow...and that is the main reason I bought my tractor...to move snow.
