Many years ago I moved into the house I'm now living in. The contractor planted some grass seed but I didn't know about it. He planted Bermuda which is just a few steps lower than the worst weed in my opinion. It hadn't sprouted yet because as soon as I moved in the worst drought to hit this area in over one hundred years was just getting started. Full grown trees died before it was over, but I brought from my old home stead a couple of squares of St. Augustine grass. This grass had been brought to the home where I grew up from my grandmother's yard a hundred miles away by my mom. I brought it to my new home over thirty years ago and planted it in sprigs by hand, and then proceeded to water it every evening to keep it from dying. My neighbors openly poked fun at me for the attention I paid that apparently dying grass. In just a year or so though I had the nicest most plush green grass lawn in the neighborhood. I know my neighbors have borrowed a few plugs here and there through the years because now most of them have at least a sampling of St. Augustine in their yards. Last winter I planted some of this fine grass at my new house, and again the rain has stopped. Just a few hours ago I drove up to the new homestead and watered the grass, yet again. It's looking good though, and in a few short years the neighbors will again be jealous of the lawn St. Augustine provides.

Hi this lot was a complete jungle a little while ago. had trees taken out, trimmed, de-rooted, fill dirt, graded etc. whats the best and cheapest way to grow great grass now? im in central florida. im just a complete newb and have no idea what my next step would be. i just want a great lawn, inexpensively. i dont have a tractor or anything. whats my best course of action? thanks for looking.
Have a soil sample done. This will tell what nutrients the soil needs. This test is inexpensive. $12.00 or so around here. Treat the soil as recommended and rest the soil for a short time.
listen to the one guy he said STRAW not hay !!! and do use a good quaility seed , my frony yard was bare dirt in april and now it looks like its never been touched, i used lots of 10-10-10 and rebels fesque tall and georgia 51 turf type whcih doesnt get to high like others, it was developed by the uga as bulldog 51 works great ,

Before seeding it might be worthwhile dragging the lot with a pasture drag, chain harrow or some home-made equivalent (eg a section of weighted chain-link fencing). Most of these can be towed with a ride-on lawn tractor/mower or ATV. Doing this will help assure your final lawn is smoother.

Depends. You'll want to match your seeding/hydro seeding/plugging program.
Hydro seeding often contains sufficient fertilizer to launch the seeds embedded in the cellulose or straw mix.
Spreading lime is important, if the soil is acidic. Do you know its ph?

sorry dont know the ph. im guessing the hydroseeding (1 acre) would be really expensive, but have not had any luck getting prices yet.
