I just got my first weight distributing hitch. Not complicated as it looked. I got a 1200/12000 pound bar set. It is rated from 600-1200 lb tongue weight, which I think is a real good range that should cover most of my needs.

Here is a link to the one I got Pro Series Trunnion Style Weight Distribution Kit with Shank, 1,200 lbs. TW / 12,000 lbs. GTW Pro Series Weight Distribution 49587

That covers me right? I dont need a 600 or a 800 lb bar do I? I saw several different weights available, but the way I understand it, I can do 500 hanging on the truck.

You're good. You can get less lift from it by putting it on a different link on the chain when hooking it up.

Less lift would be a longer chain length, correct?

That would be correct, but my WD set recommends that the bars remain parallel with the bottom of the trailer tongue frame.
