Hello everyone! I am newly registered here but already love the site big fan of tractors. I just had a question about 540, and 1000 rpm PTOS. I know 540 RPM PTOS are 6 spline and 1000 are 21 spline. I was recently asked which would cause less damage to the implement and tractor. A 1000 RPM shaft to a 540 implement, 540 shaft to 1000 implement. I guessed it was a trick question as the splines prevent coupling, but for the sake of the argument I went ahead and stated 540 rpm shaft to 1000 implement as that is roughly half the max rpms of the implement, where as the other option is double the max rpms. Anyway, what does everyone say?

Guess i would have to agree with you. 1000 to 540 and u would spin the guts out of the gearbox and 540 to 1000 wouldnt spin it fast enough to do the job.

Thanks a bunch buddy! This was for a class and I don't know if it was a trick question or serious. None the less I made the difference in splines, and did reference interchangeable stub shafts with the operator running the implement at the other higher stub shaft speed. Appreciate the help!

Anytime. Yea it sounded like.

Just to clarify a bit more, 540 rpm PTO is for smaller implements and 1000 rpm shafts are used for 80+ hp tractor implements.

My tractor has 2 speed pto same shaft for 540 or 1000. I didn't know trere were 2 different splines. I try to learn something new every day.........

When I was shopping around for tractors, I looked at a 21 HP kubota compact that had a 540 and 1000 speed PTO. Before that I never knew there was a 1000 speed PTO. I ended up buying a 55 HP tractor but it only has a 540 PTO. So it must be the 540 is the most common?

As neucam said .. [need the higher rpm to reduce the required drive torque for hi hp implements]. The 1000 rpm option is good for pumps too, as well as 540 implements that dont require much torque. Lets you run the engine slower. Wouldnt have a tractor without it.

As above , if you only have light mowing to do and your tractor has 540/1000rpm PTO . Reduce your engine speed by nearly half and you will still have around 540 out the back to run the mower very economically . My tractor came with a 20 spline stub and a 6 , it only takes a minute to change them out .

You can still use the 1000 rpm speed with a 6 spline stub if the attachment is a suitable size for your tractor . I give my tractor and flail mower a hard time and have never used the 20 spline stub , it's still in the wax paper it came in .

I usta have a small Bota with the dual speed PTO. Found it great on a small snow blower when I didn't need a lot of HP. I then switched up to a bigger Deere with a single speed pto and now I need to run it at full rpm to get the snow to clear the driveway shoulder.
I also liked the PTO clutch on the Bota. You could ease into the load gently. The Deere SNAPS in, then when you disengage it STOPS the pto shaft instead of coasting to a halt.
