PT422 Engine shaking / sputtering

Oh no the one on the lefts coil is going bad. Don't put the new one in backwards.

unfortunately you have to remove the plastic cover that shrouds the flywheel to access the ground wire for the coil on the left side. when I took mine apart I removed enough of the plastic shroud to access the nut on the crank with a deep well socket, then replaced the missing shroud piece with a plastic cap that snapped into place. when I check my valve lash I no longer have to pull the shroud off the flywheel IE; time saver.

Now I had to ask myself "How in the heck can someone put a sparkplug in backwards?" and then after reading it about three more times I realized you meant the coil!

I'm getting spark on both plugs... wouldn't a bad coil = no spark? Or can it just be "weaker"?

They can work when cold and fail when hot. Mine was erratic at first and then got worse.

Oh I see... thanks.

Maybe when the engine is vibrating its causing it to short against something (assuming it's a mouse eaten wire at the source).

Yes, or a loose connection vibrates and does not make a good connection.

Check your valve clearances. Mine tightened up well before the recommended adjustment interval.

Heck, check to see that a rocker arm hasn't come adrift. That's been reported once or twice, and could account for all of your symptoms.

Tell us more about setting the valve clearance. I have close to 1200 hrs on my robin 22 hp engine and have never had the valve covers off. I am starting to hear some clatter though. What are the settings and the procedure for setting them or where do you find these procedures? Sometimes piston slap can be confused with valve clearance chatter. I hope that is not what I am hearing. Although it is not that bad. I have had motors that were running good sound much louder.

Google Robin engine for a downloadable service manual, covers EH 63, 64, 65, and 72. Also has parts manual for download--all free. Covers everything pretty well. I was just there due to a rocker arm stud which became loose on my PT2422 (25)hp. Everything OK now.
