3-Point Hitch Extending the reach of a bush hog

/ Extending the reach of a bush hog #11
Bush Hog is a company. They do make rotary cutters, a.k.a. brush hogs or rough cutters, but they make many other implements as well. So just to be sure what you are talking about, I presume you are referring to a brush hog and not an unspecified implement made by Bush Hog??

Remind me not to get a beer out of the fridgidair :D

Also don't forget to use slip joint pliers instead of channel locks.
Locking pliers instead of Vise Grips. etc...

Hi all,

I have a bit of a issue. I have a LP QuickHitch attachment and use it with all of my implements including a 48 inch bush hog. This works well for most of my land, but I have a issue with our dam and pond. Our access road to our neighboorhood goes over the dam, and on the pond side there is a steep 12 to 20 foot slope down to the edge of our pond. I can put the tractor on the dam road, and can shuffle the tractor sidewase on the road to get the bush hog down the dam face and bush hog the upper half of the dam face. The problem is that I can't reach far enough down the dam without putting the tractor on the steep face of the dam. Frankly, I'm afraid of flipping the tractor on such a steep slope.

Has anyone heard of extensions that I could put into the 3 point hitch and PTO so that the bush-hog has a longer reach?

Other then that, my other choice is a weed wacker.

There have been a number of items on ditch or bank mowers. I'm not sure any covered 12-20' reach. Here is one http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/89067-ditch-bank-mower-build.html I would look at a sickle bar, as suggested, as a faster way to do the top portion and get a good trimmer for the rest. My big Stihl trimmer with dual handles and a harness is well balanced. Not as much fun as the tractor, but much safer on steep slops

You would need to check to see how much articulation is in the sickle bar to see if it will match the slope with your tractor on flat ground.

Yes ... it's a rotary cutter...can you help with my problem?

The sickle bar seems the most likely solution. I have seen guys take push mowers (from medium to brush cutting size), remove the handles, attach a rope to each side, let gravity pull the deck down hill, then hoist it back up. There was one guy on each side. With a heavy deck, it might be feisable to set a heavy anchor and let the ropes slide through caribiners. Using a small electric winch is another possibility. It might be possible mount a winch on your 3ph, take a Swisher Trail Mower like this one:

Swisher Trailmower 44in. Cutting Width, 11.5 HP, Model# T11544 | Trail Mowers | Northern Tool + Equipment

attach each end of an 8 ft. chain or cable to the 2 front corners, put a caribiner or hook in the middle, attach the end of the winch cable to that connector, then use the winch to lower and raise the deck. Repositioning the tractor and Swisher over and over would be a PITA, but it could get the job done.

There is a very expensive solution, which would be fun to do if you had the money. That is to swap the B tractor for an M and put a boom mounted flail on the back. I see those by the highway trimming deep ditches a lot, or even giving a "haircut" to a tall hedge row. I imagine it would take more than that to justify a bigger tractor, but hey, aren't most of us always looking for an excu, er, make that, a justifiable reason, to buy a bigger tractor? :D

To Larry, Curly, Moe, and Shemp, you are all so hilarious. It's easy to see why you all have gone so far in life.

Out of curiosity, how "steep" of a slope are we talking about? 15 degrees, 20 degrees etc.

I will make a xerox copy of this.

Here's another expensive solution. Can you buy a new M and equip it with a boom mower for less than $51,850?

BrushHound LX-1000 RC Flail Slope Mower
