Jaws for pulling small trees

I dunno, I'm kind of leaning twoard the hedgerow busters used on the Shermans Danno1 was reminded about. Think this could be a no problem deal till you got it home to say honey, look what I bought today.

Actually I don't.. but I will snap a couple when I use it again. I used a piece of 1/2 inch steel plate about 6 inches long and three or four inches wide welded to one leg, and bolted through to the other to allow the frame to fold. The top edge has a slot cut in it 1/2 inch wide and 3/4 inch deep to hold the chain from slipping. When the frame goes over forward, the tractor automatically pulls the chain out of the slot and carries on.

If I had to do it again, I'd use better grade steel for the top plate, mine's been bent a bit. Maybe armor plate or tool steel would be better, I used mild steel.

The only real problem with it is the weight, it's about 40 pounds I'd guess. We only use it for stubborn stumps or in spots where you don't want to go with the tractor. As usual, traction is the limiting factor when pulling stumps. Even with R1's, the 3400 will dig three nice deep holes if the stump doesn't come loose easily.

I had thought about just sliding a short piece of pipe over the chain. Wrap chain around tree. Hook the hook on the tractor end of the pipe. No welding.
