I got rats again in the small barn. This is where the chicken coop and aviary are and every few years we get some due to spilled feed (feed is stored in steel so they can't get at it but you know chickens). This year, the poison I usually get (and that worked amazing in 1 to 2 days) is not available to me as it's been regulated to a higher level that you have to be a licensed user to purchase.

Anyhow, regular bait boxes have not done a thing. I've cleaned the pen out big time and there are tunnels underground that I have flooded, but still rats.

How do you guys get rid of them? (We have cats too by the way).

Rats need food and water. If they can't get those they will move elsewhere. Is it possible to seal your chicken coop? All openings greater than 1/2" would need to be sealed.

I cannot seal it as the whole thing is on a dirt floor. They tunnel under. I have restricted the food to try and get them into the bait stations but so far no go. I have patience on my side though.

We have rats and mice around our barn and chicken coop. We have found the following product works great. :licking: I made up some cedar boxes with a rat size hole for entry/exit. I nail the product to the bottom of the box so they don't carry it off, so it does not get to were the chickens or goats could get at it. It's kind of like a waxy candle shape. Have I said it works great. :D

Jaguar ® Bait Chunx ® contains the strongest anticoagulant available for the toughest rat and mouse problems. Jaguar Bait Chunx can kill in a single feeding. Jaguar Baint Chunx is an all-weather rat poison that has multiple gnawing edges and a hole in the center for placing on bait station securing rods.

jimmyj, took a few pics to show you the product. You can get it in a small box, or mid size pail (that's what I buy) or a large pail. The mid size pail is about $35.00. Did I mention it works great. :D

Thanks Mouse. I think I'll make a couple today. I went hunting around and stupid me, I found that I'd left a full sack of grain behind my feed freezer!!!! The thing was half empty! No wonder they weren't going for my bait.

Anyhow, thanks for the tip!

I find if you have chickens you have rats. Cats get some but not if you have a lot of them. Great trap, think I'll build one too!

get a terrier. Airedale or Irish terrier, will clear you rats out in no time.

Try this, it works on both Rats and mice.

Build your own repeating mouse trap by Allen Easterly Issue #110

That looks slick and soooo simple!

Thanks for that link. I'll be trying this out soon.

ditto ... I'm jumping on the bucket bandwagon too! :D Declared war on the mice after I opened the air filter on my truck and found it full of sunflower seeds from the bird food.

I had rats in my barn, LOTS of them... I also had 3 barn cats, they did an okay job but still they didn't get all of them. Do your self a favor and get the "Rat Zapper" I think I paid about $50 bucks for it a few years ago, but man, can that think kill rats (safely too). Needless to say, I have no more rats. Google search it, I might even have a photo if I look hard enough. It'll get all your rats. I have chickens, and no rats. Good luck!

I use the bucket trap also but put a toilet paper roll on the wire/with peanut butter on the roll..Works great.

With or without the paper? How do the mice get to the roll? Balancing act along the wire?

We like using the Jaguar bait as they just go die somewhere and we don't have to deal with them.

Depends on where the little buggers go off and die ;). If they work their way into an outbuilding or decide they'd like to meet their maker inside the walls of your house if they can find their way in...

Perfect screen name for this discussion though .

Hi Max,
I heard about those traps. Some say they are great and some say they don't last.
How's yours on lasting
