I have a MF285 and that thing is a mule. I pull a 15' batwing and no problems at all. Great on fuel and performance. Wouldnt take for mine.

I have owned 1 for 15 years and I did use it to farm with and now as a loader tractor in the business. Blows about 1 head gasket per year. Ours is down in our shop today with a blowed gasket and needs a ring gear and bendix. Ken Sweet

You certainly are not suggesting that is the norm for a 285 are you?

I have a certified MF mechanic working for me and he says that head gasket problem has always been a fly in the ointment for the 285. I am sure our problem is worse because we start the tractor so many times a day, hot or cold. When I was only using it for farming, no problem. Ken Sweet

I have owned 2 285 for over 20 years .... and run 'em hard. Never had any engine concerns at all except for when debris on the ground flips up and knocks the oil filter off ....... they do like oil pressure !!!

If you have head gasket issues ..... have you assured the block and head surfaces are true ??? As long as the surfaces are true, head bolts are properly sized and torqued, and your not lugging the engine at too low of rpm's under heavy load ... you should not have head gasket issues.

The 285 is a true beast and somewhat fuel-efficient and designed as a true work horse .... not like many of the throw-away tractors. Clean fuel + clean air + clean oil + and a little care and these guys will run for 7 - 8500-hrs. with no problems.

I agree 100% I haven't had any trouble out of mine and it has close to 6000 hrs on it. One of the best tractors I've ever owned.
