We live in a sub-division in Northern California probably 200 yards from an open field and a quarter mile from many orchards. Definitely not what I would consider rural, our lot is a whopping 8000 square feet.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago we got tired of the cats waking us up to go out in the middle of the night so I bought a cat door. One of the type that slides into the opening of a sliding glass door. Over the last two weeks only one of our three cats had figured out how to use it. Last night at about 3:30 am I heard the one cat go out and a couple of minutes later I heard scratching at the door so I looked over to see which one of the other 2 cats were trying to come in. I saw a bushy tail and 2 silhouettes and thought it was odd that both of the other cats would be trying to come in at the same time. So I got up to help them with the flap since they still hadn't got the hang of it.

To my surprise it was a family of four beautiful raccoons. I am very happy that I woke up. I can only imagine the outcome of 4 raccoons in the house in the middle of the night. So much for the cat door.

Maybe you could offer a "coonskin hat" for free to anyone that buys a Bota rebuilt tractor from you. ;)

I'm sure here in California there is some kind of law against killing and skinning raccoons. Heck, I might have even broken the law by not letting them in my house.

They have cat doors with magnetic releases, so the door only opens for the cat with the thing on its collar, nothing else. Maybe worth checking into!

Raccoons are NASTY .... they have killed many of our chickens and it`s not pretty. They typically don`t even eat them , they just kill them for fun I guess...they got four little ones through 1in. welded wire that was only on one of the four sides, on a 2ft.X4ft. cage I built a couple years ago , by working in tandem.:smiley_aafz:

I can`t even fathom what might have happened had they got into your home:shocked:

That is what I would have preferred to get in the first place, but our cats won't wear collars. They almost immediately pull them off.

Having been through the coons in the house thing, we use the magnetic collar type cat door for our three cats with success. Having lost several collars, I switched to "wire tye" collars, adjusted so they can't come off, and it works well.
