Usually 76" between the fenders. They make them wider and its a good option. Usually runs about another $200 for a 16-18 trailer. My 18' trailer has the wide option taking it to 82" between the fenders.

the 6 inch difference doesn't sound like much but it makes a big difference if you wish to haul a vehicle............I have the 82" wide also........

I guess I should elaborate here a little. Since you said utility trailer I was only talking between the finders. The max width that can be towed down public roads in most states is 8'6" or 102". This is the max width, from wheel to wheel or whatever sticks out the farthest on the trailer. If any wider you must get a wide load permit. In Indiana its very easy to do via the Fax machine which we do a few times a year to transport larger boats.

You can get a deck over trailer that is 102" wide with a flat deck. On these the tires ride below the deck. This is not considered a utility trailer and they have there place. I had one and the main disadvantages to them is the high deck and steep ramp angles associated with it for loading.

Talked with a trailer builder today he said he was not sure about the 84"/102" in VA he went on to say he could build a 82"/100" 2 5200lbs axles 16' there is one place at the moment on our property which I can get my tractor on to my current trailer. I am researching this for I would like to get one with ramps which I can unload and load dirt, gravel, manure, compost, wood chips etc.. via the ramp?? and have some flexibility with location. I have already bent both axles on my current trailer and had to have it welded a couple times so I think I need to upgrade. I believe he mentioned anything bigger than 84? would require a special licence. Who would I contact about the width and other laws pertaining to trailers in VA,TN.

You sure about that? States can restrict 102's on other than federally funded highways.

Been awhile but as I recall coming south on 15 into Leesburg, it was either 102's or 53's that Virginia did not allow?

Isn't that what the DMV link I posted says? 8.5" width

but 48' - Trailer (53' trailers allowed on interstate system)

These are the maximimums allowed, I thought that's what you were asking?

In Mo, when I bought my 16' x 8' 6" trailer (10 years or so ago), the law was "within 10 miles of designated routes" (major roads). Except farm use, over width is OK for farm use! ~~ grnspot110
