Thread Sealant (with Teflon) for my hydraulic connection

I just did a Google search on the term "teflon tape for hydraulics". Found some neat stuff! One thing that really stood out was this PowerPoint...I am sure the guy just put it on the first thread...

Very scary PowerPoint: System Safety PPS

What's crazy is I've worked on some hyd systems that say in their owners manual "If any teflon tape is found on any fittings/hoses....the warranty is void".......yet my new Kubota has ALL the fittings/hoses with tape....:confused2:

Wow Kennyd, I love it....(well not the tape).....Great info Thanx......

I do understand that tractor hydraulics is pretty straight forward but........you know......:mur:

My two Kubota tractors (purchased new) both have Teflon tape on all the hydraulic fittings.

I suppose it is OK if it is put there by "professionals".

I have been using a pipe dope successfully for quite a while now, carefully so as not to get any into the system.
Also in a pinch I have used polyurathane caulking, again not gobs, just enough to fill the threads with end cleaned B4 inserting the fitting.

I have noticed (mostly on import stuff) that they use epoxy to seal up threads-- a real bear to disassemble. (maybe it is a form of lock-tite to make up for sloppy assembly)

Before I left FL for the spring/summer I was amassing all the parts (fittings, tubing, valves etc.) for my grapple and top & tilt projects...I shopped at three different hydraulic (specialty) shops including a Goodyear Hose outlet...they all said tape was fine...but be judicious with it...

not sure where I heard or read it (very possibly here) that tape or paste is really just a lubricant (not really a sealant) that the threads themselves actually do the sealing...the "lubricant" just allows you to tighten the connections tight enough for the threads to seal...

That would be correct... I have never had a problem with it.. Maybe some one can make me understand how 2000 plus psi is going to be less pressure then atmospheric pressure. My point being, if tape is on right, no way should it get in the system. But that is the real problem, if it is put on in the right way.

No Tape HERE.... if you are working on a very simple system, pump-PR-valve-cylinder (wood splitter or basic tractor system) then you can get away with it.
Now lets work on a system with pilot operated checks, holding valves, counterbalance valves, sequence valves, closed center systems and now lets put a person up in the bucket or winch 100 tons of steel..... been their, found the problem, here's your bill.... Jim

I gave up on this argument years ago.

Like anything else, if applied correctly, it's OK. If not, it may be problematic.

I use tape successfully, have for years. The rest of you can do as you please.

......Teflon Tape in Hyd Systems makes lots of trouble......why would anybody chance it with the cost of repairs/troubleshooting.....(although great for the Hyd Shop).......Is Teflon Tape Better?.....No.....Pipe fittings are interference fit , the tape or paste is only a lubricant to minimize galling .....Ever notice when you use pipe threads over and over again they seam to leak, Pipe Threads were never meant to be used more than once......

Years ago at a Motion Industries Hydraulic Seminar the instructor mentioned in Alabama at the main headquarters they used to sell Teflon Tape cheap and snicker when someone bought it......
