I have to replace the two gears on my JD 47 inch 2 stage snowblower which is attached to a JD 455 garden tractor. Because my snowblower serial number is after SN060848 I cannot buy just the gears......I have to buy the complete gear box that costs $850-$1000 depending who you talk to. THat's a lot of $ for two gears. Thanks John Deere ....I'm sure you've got a good reason.....but it's very expensive for me.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks.....Casey

ANy idea who the manufacturer of the blower is? or did deere make it in house? Its not a Berco is it? If it was another company you might be able to get it cheaper thru them without paying the deere markup.

Local machine shop might be able to make something up for less as well.

Should I assume this is the right angle gearbox at the pto shaft? Might want to look for a replacement gearbox without all the add on charges. Is this a 1:1 ratio or something else? Does the impeller connect to a straight thru shaft on this gear box?

Hi Jason......The gear box has JD part numbers on it. I talked to a gear manufacturing company in Montreal and they told me to buy the complete box from JD because they would have to charge about $1500 just to make and harden the gears.....ouch
Thanks ....Casey

Hi Steve.....This is a front mount snowblower....a small shaft runs from back to front and has the impeller on it and the gear has 10 teeth. The other shaft runs perpedicular to the smallshaft and passes through the augers and the gear on this shaft has 54 teeth. These are bevel gears but the pinion is not very big........I think a helex or worm gear would be stronger but more $.
Thanks......Casey

can you remove the gears? Id take the gear box to your local bearing and drives shop and just replace the gears and chain with what ever they have. all you need is the shaft dia, and center to center length.

I don't know what my serial number is, but the local lawn and garden shop had gears for my 47 last spring. They were around 130 for the pair. I just got a new chain for around 20. Those shafts and gears are not super duper high tech stuff. Any machine shop should be able to help you press the gears off/on.

that 1200 dollar price is insane for what it is.

Hi Guys ...Thanks for your input. I was looking for the gears in the gear box and not the sprokets that are chain driven. I did not find anything suitable in the MSC catalog (miter gear section). However I did find a complete identical used gear box on Ebay that worked out well.
In the JD parts book for 47" 2 stage snowblower.....any blower with SN#SN060848 or higher the gears do not show part numbers and I was told by JD parts man that (more than One JD dealer) I had to buy the complete gear box (made in Spain).
Thanks.....Casey
