It's a tribute to the relative anonymity of the internet.

When I was a kid (maybe 10 or 12), I started to learn to play golf using my dad's clubs in the schoolyard field. I noticed that some were getting a little rusty (small pits) so I took the whole set and "polished" them by using the bench grinder. Took all the chrome plating off but was I proud. They shone real nice (for about a day or so). Dad went to use them and I can still hear him yelling my name. (I knew I was in trouble because he included my MIDDLE name). Wasn't the only dumb thing I did as a kid and despite all the yelling, to this day, I imagine Mom and Dad had a good chuckle behind closed doors about some of them.

You're right that EVERYONE does dumb things and maybe that's why I'm more tolerant than some others I know of younger people who do "dumb" things.

I'm pretty tolerant of the "oops!" kind of dumb things that kids do, but I have zero tolerance for the kids who do dumb stuff because they think it will be funny or because they are trying to impress someone.

Okay, I have enough balance that I can participate in self deprecating statements!

I must preface this experience with pointing out that I had been working a LOT, PLUS trying to keep everything caught up around the place so I was completely exhausted when this happened.

It was over 20 years ago on a three day weekend, either Memorial Day or Labor Day. I had been shredding all day the day before and my nieces had come for the weekend. In spite of being exhausted I stayed up late playing cards with my nieces, my kids and my wife.

I got up early the next morning and went out to fuel the tractor for the days work. I had busted the rear end on my pickup so it was setting on jack stands all around at the rear of my shop. The fuel tank was in the back of the pick up with a short hose. I pulled up very close to the back of the pick up so the hose would reach the tractor tank.

In front of the pickup was my car facing the truck nose to nose. I fueled the tractor, put away the hose and started the tractor. I had it in a forward gear instead of reverse and it moved just enough forward to knock the truck forward off the jack stands into my car.

It made a VERY loud noise and woke up the house. They all came running out to see what happened. As it turned out I was VERY lucky. It didn't hurt the truck and it only clipped the bottom of the front license plate on the car. The tractor of course was not hurt. The only damage was my pride and it took awhile to get the truck back off the floor onto jack stands to finish the work.

I was really quite amazed that I've never seen a crack in the shop floor where the truck fell.

Okay, so there you go. If you missed the humor in the whole thing; I knocked MY truck into MY car with MY tractor.

I've always seen the incident as a pretty good case for the dummy award. If that's the only thing anyone ever knew about me I suppose that they would have wanted me out of the gene pool, but I do have other redeeming qualities... I REALLY do!

I seem to recall hearing this story before...

I agree. Stuff that is done strictly for show, not "ignorance based" makes me shake my head. And I don't mean "ignorance" in a bad way. We're all ignorant of most things until someone teaches us or we learn by experience. THAT is what I am tolerant of. I like the satisfaction of passing on some knowledge. I've always been appreciative of people who have explained things to me without being impatient or condescending about it.

Amen.

Additionally if we're too hard on ourselves or others about mistakes, no one would have the courage to try things. This is especially true of young folk. The process of learning and building confidence is full of failures and mistakes. We just have to hope that no permanent damage is done.
