Dumbest Thing you have done with your tractor

my stupidity repeats every 20 years or so.

In 1986 I bought a brandy new Kubota tlb (abt 18hp as I remember)

The first challenge was getting it off my flatbed truck. No problem - I just backed into a steep bank and drove it right off. After the required hour or so of play time I drive it around to the back of the house to put in in the basement garage.

Backing it up to line up with the garage door I hit my well casing and snap the back hoe step right off

Fast forward to 2009. This time Messicks delivers my brandy new L3400 tlb on a tilt truck - life is a lot easier. After their driver leaves I have the required hour of play time then decide to put in in the basement garage. While backing up to line up with the door. . . yep, you guessed it, I snapped one of the BH76 steps right off an the well casing. I swear you can see the 20 year old 'scar' from the first encounter as well as the really fresh one.

I am sure the fate of the broken piece now is the same as the one 20 years ago. I kept saying I was going to have it welded back on and in the end gave it to the person who bought it from me in a bag.

:eek:Dumbest thing I have DONE TO MY tractor----Bought a used MF135, a few years ago, that had never been cleaned. Well, I started soaking the tractor down with a mixture of "gunk" and gasoline. I started applying the mixture close to the starter and the brush had a metal band holding the brissels. I guess you know what happened !! --band hit hot cable on starter and instantly caught fire. Luckey for me, and the tractor, I had a waterhose within reach and put the fire out and I didn't have the whole machine covered. Minimal damage:thumbsup:
I ALWAYS disconnect the ground cable but, for some reason, I didn't this time time:eek:
Really clean where it burnt:thumbsup:

I am new to "new" tractors.. Bought my first new one this summer. I had been around older tractors but not these new ones with all the bells and whistles.. I bought a L3240 after looking for a few weeks and reading a lot here. Wow I was excited to finally get one. Well it showed up one Saturday and the gentleman said I am here to show you anything that you need to know about this thing. After about 30 mins I thought I was the --MAN-- wife both kids were watching and I did it:mad: Sitting on the tractor being the King I said ok whats this lever do.. He kinda laughed and said that is the seat adjustment.. Wife laughed and walked away:confused2: I said quickly no this one quickly pointing to something esle:thumbsup: I just hope that it gets no worse than that

Dumbest thing I ever done was traded my first JD 2320 for a JD 3320. For me and my situation, the 3320 was not the best choice. Bigger isn't always better. Now I own another JD 2320.......yep, it was dumb because I would have had the first 2320 paid for now.........you live and learn I guess!

--- I wonder if driving into "I'm stuck" situations is done unconsciously just to see if you can get out? And to "rev' her up!" to see how tough she is, how much she can take? Remember the movie Airport where George Kennedy was trying to get the jet unstuck?
--- It's like our 4320. There's max power; then there's overdrive max power; then there's the "get unstuck blow the motor if you stay in it too long pedal" max power.
--- " Oh yea, she can take it."

--- And don't forget the cigar.

So, I'm in the 9th grade and dad says to change oil on his recently acquired work car (used Pontiac 4 door sedan with straight 8 and 4spd auto tranny. I get some tools, crawl under and pull the drain plug to drain into a pan, remove the filter, prefill the new filter and install and pour in the new oil. I fire it up and drive it out from under the carport to the alley and around the half block back to the carport but behind mom's car not in front of it. The tranny acted really weird grabbing then slipping. I told dad and he told me to change oil again but not the filter and use the drain plug for the crankcase not the tranny this time. Used mom's car to go to parts store for more tranny fluid. My first time under a car with auto tranny and the drain plug looked a lot like the one for engine oil...

Pat

Thought I would be a good vehicle owner and change the transmission filter and oil in my truck. Pulled it in the shop, dropped the pan, drained the oil, put the new filter in, put the pan back on, lifted the hood and got ready to put the oil in, NO oil. So proud of myself for changing the filter I forgot to buy the oil, had to fire up the motorgrader and ride to town in style to the parts store and buy transmission fluid.

I hope not...

--- Once when I was picking rocks with the FEL on the 720 I came back to the farm for something and I used the spinner knob to whip the tractor around in the driveway and I clipped the gas tank that sits up about 6 to 12 feet high....It teetered on the edge of tipping over [as I watched in slow-motion]; and when it finally did [tip over] it spewed gasoline all over the tractor and me. I quickly shut the tractor off. Luckily it did not ignite. That was another lesson learned the hard way.
