Visiting a Kubota dealer in N.C. over the weekend the salesman told me that they collect Va sales tax. How can this be ? aren't states sovereign ?

Doesn't mean they (the states involved) can't have some type of reciprocal agreement.

Just a thought -- perhaps NC and VA have some sort of reciprocal agreement to collect sales taxes for interstate sales.

Do they have a store also in Virginia? Up here if a company also operates in the state you are from they will charge you sales tax if they have to deliver to that address.

I've seen this alot lately. Bought a new car in Sept of 09, They collected sales tax, (seperate check) and registered the car at the dealership had plates there, didn't send a runner. (Massachusetts).

Best ever tho? I went last Tuesday to get the run thru on my new B3300, figuring I'd have to write a check for the sales tax. They rolled it into the 0% 7 year loan. I know there is a lot of debate as to whether or not Kubota's financing is a deal or a screwing or somewhere in between, but sheesh!! They have to take $$ out of pocket to pay the state, and I have 7 years to pay it back, for 0%??

Contact your state house Rep. just to make sure.

People from Mass. were purchasing tires in NH,state of Mass. try to collect tax's from tire dealer..NH took Mass. to court..Mass. back off.

I just realized you were buying in another state. I did get a price on my tractor at a New Hamphire dealer, where I would have saved about $1,700 if I paid cash, but apparently if you finance, you pay tax in the state you live in.

Back in 2005, I almost bought a tractor in Mount Airy but to "match" the price I got in VA (with tax), they were going to sell it without NC tax and deliver it to VA. I said no thanks... and bought it in VA. (just didn't have a warm fuzzy feeling with those guys...)

Have you given a call to Barlow's for a price??? They are not too far...

I'm sure that laws vary across states, but SC requires that taxpayers (a) report out-of-state purchases for which sales taxes were not paid and (b) pay a "use" tax.

"Merchandise bought outside of South Carolina for use or storage in this state is subject to the "use" tax if an equal amount of sales tax was not paid to another state at the time of purchase. This applies to catalog and Internet purchases as well."

use tax due on out-of-state, internet and catalog purchases
