Maybe it's overkill but I'd love to chrome the wheels on my JD 2320.

Anyone know about what it might cost to have them done, or are there any
wheel houses that offer a chrome wheel for CUT's?

I'm guessing it would cost a grand to do all 4 wheels.

Just look up chrome plating on Google.
You're in MI...not too far from the automotive industry. I'm sure you'llfind companies close to you for a realistic quote.

Thanks Roy. There is a place in Detroit that can do it. Maybe when I'm done for the season next week I will call and get an idea.

I just think it would look nice.

I paid $99 per wheel to have some rims chromed about 15 years ago.

Have you asked the dealer whether they have the chrome wheel inserts for your wheels? That would be much cheaper. They had fronts but not rears for my X475. I wanted the yellow inserts anyway but I asked about the chrome ones for kicks.

Seeing as you're in the lawn business.... how upset are you going to be the first time you notice a six inch scratch in your newly minted jewels?

The machine will be used about 20 hours a year at this point. I'm more concerned with them not scratching the wheels getting the tires back on frankly.

I'll look into the inserts though. Thanks for that suggestion!

I may even do a test with some good Chrome Krylon paint and see what it looks like though I don't expect it will be that fabulous.

We call that Kentucky Chrome around here.:laughing::laughing:

No offense to the good folks from Kentucky.

That 4200 with the 8B backhoe would look mighty cool with chromed wheels, Arrabil!

Yeah screw the krylon. There are some new high tech chrome painting options but they won't be any cheaper than chroming I bet, and few places do it.

I'll look into it over winter here.

Does anyone know if the wheels are powder coated or painted with traditional paint?

No way Roy! A JD is supposed to be green, black, and yellow in that order. :)

If you do chrome the rims, better lock that tractor up tight as a drum or those 24 inchers will get stolen overnight!!

Maybe I'll get some spinners.

If you're thinking about getting the wheels chromed, you might want to look up "Hydrogen Embrittlement" first.

I was thinking about that when this thread started...not sure it's such a problem with decorative chrome as it is with hard chrome...but it is something to ask about at the plater's.

Why would hydrogen embrittlement matter in this application?

My chromed wheels had no trouble at 145mph nor did they break when I ran over a 4x4 piece of lumber in the middle of Washington DC. :D

What would cause exposure to hydrogen in a place that you'd think knows all about embrittlement anyway?

Hydrogen embrittlement can result in the metal cracking. Once a crack starts, it will propagate until a failure.
There's a stress relieving process (after plate) to eliminate this possibility.

But why would this happen at a place that specializes in such things and surely knows the dangers of it?

Most reputable companies would probably stress relieve after plating, but it is something to ask about.

I do nickel and not chrome but I'd guess about $200-$300 per wheel depending on condition. And your location, of course. It varies a lot by region. Heavily regulated areas can almost double that price.

Some places may give you an estimate over the phone but that price probably won't include stripping paint/powder coat or repairs.
