They all have proprietary parts, and they all over charge about the same amount for them.

well, i'm sure we'll muddle through this somehow...

filters and belts are not proprietary items, nor should they be.:)

The problem is, that's an opinion. And, they :)tractor:) don't agree.

All they have to do is make them unique, and presto, they are proprietary.

Hopefully, the company that makes them for MF, will be allowed to sell them under their own label at some point. But, I would not look for them to be a lot cheaper.

The aftermarket suppliers have to be able to sell enough of them to recover their research, production, and distribution costs. And they are going to take the opportunity to still rob you on it.

So, until there are enough of us out there, to generate some quantity of aftermarket parts, we are going to have to smile and say to the dealers, thank you m.f.

good point. i should have said 'filters and belts are almost universally not thought to be proprietary'.

on the other hand, if manufacturers are seen to be making it hard on customers, exhibiting out of control greed, causing totally unnecessary hardship, then customers probably won't have much trouble buying something else.

you can bet i'll be writing that iseki/toyota eng oil filter number on my wall.:)

I don't think there is greed involved; they need to make profits to stay in business. It's always easy to assume there is all kids of profit being made based on feelings.

Try buying parts after they go out of business.

If they don't make their profit projections, they can choose to stop production. 10 years from the date they stop making a particular model of a tractor, they are not legally obligated to provide ANY parts.

then customers probably won't have much trouble buying something else.

Read up, and you will find as I said, MF prices are no higher than the rest. There are lots of posts complaining about the same things in the other manufacturer forums. So, there is nothing else to buy.

As far as resale goes, keep in mind, anything posted on here has the potential of long term effect on sales of model new, and used.

Ten years from now, someone looking to buy your used unit, can be influenced by what is posted today.

yes, and owners and potential owners, now quite happy to know that quality engine oil filters can be cheaply and easily had will feel better for it. those whose service schedule is affected by cost will be less reluctant to service their machines over the long term.

i can hardly imagine how good we will feel when somebody figures out which common and inexpensive filter works for the hydro.

then again, this discussion has probably been going on for a long time too. i guess it's a matter of perspective and a person's position relative to the buyer/seller relationship.

i really don't believe the argument that buying aftermarket filters and belts is going to drive any of these corporations out of business.

That was not really what my point was.

Manufacturing today is an expensive business, with lots of liability.

Modest profits don't make it attractive to investors.

The parts are expensive, but that is why they are making these tractors, because it's worth while. When it's not, they will stop.

That would not be cool.

In the event I can't get parts for my GC through my dealer what options do I have in the future? I'm refering to filters, blades and / or belts for my SCUT. Are there dealers on this site that will ship these items with a credit card order? Can any of these filters or belts be sourced through TSC or an automotive supply house such as NAPA.

Thanks All

I would be pretty confident in saying that you could pick up the phone, if the internet wasn't available, and call most any of Massey's dealers in North America and have those parts shipped to your door pretty easy.

On a side note,
Buying on-line is great, I do it all the time for stuff I can't get around here, but I also try to buy as much stuff as possible locally. I need little in the area of support after a sale, but when I do, it really helps to have someone to talk to. I realize some people have crappy dealers or the local guy closed up, or just charges too much. That just makes the good dealers even more valuable.

I always love to see that TV spot with the guy tearing his hair out doing his taxes on the computer, and his wife keeps telling him to "ask the box". I try to avoid that situation as much as possible!

I just called my local dealer that I ride my tractor too from time to time (1 mile away). And we are complaining about a $22.18 filter for the hydro that gets changed every 250 hrs?

Ok look at it like this. Would you like to invent a product and a week later have Joe Dirt down the road invent the same thing only to use cheaper parts and sell it at half the price you are and then your out of buisness two weeks later cuz everyone is buying his even tho it wont last as long as your.
MF, Bota and JD have this filters and oils for a reason. They are designed for the pumps in there equipment.

I am really baffled at people who go out and buy a $20,000 machine and are afraid to pay 20-30 bucks for a filter for it-They want to buy the cheapest oil and the cheapest filters-I don't get it?
