I have always pretty much used leather, lace up, insulated boots for hunting/cold weather wear.. I keep seeing ads in magazine and catalogs for knee high, neoprene/rubber boots.. Most all are waterproof, some say they are breathable, and a few mention the foot area is based on an athletic shoe.. they offer them with no insulation, up to 2000 gr of insulation.. some are even offered in 'no scent' models for hunting..

Im not talking about the TSC $20 rubber boots for mud/farm use that fit rather sloppily. The ones advertised are normally $79 and up and are typically tapered at the ankle

Any experiences/thoughts on these boots for snow/hunting/winter wear??

As long as you feet dont get wringing wet, and your socks end up at your toes, and they are comfortable - I am thinking that may be the way to go in the future

I have a pair of Muck Chore boots:

I really love them - except for one thing: I have high arches and the boots exert some pressure onto the top of my foot which causes some discomfort after wearing them for 3 - 4 hours or more ....

Probably my fault - mebbe should have gotten them a size larger ....

I use a pair anytime I'm outside and it is wet. I've got the Le Chameau boots which zip up the side and are fully leather-lined. Cost - not a problem for me as I got them at a yard sale. Probably the best yard sale find I'll ever make - $15.00. Fifteen dollars and 10 years later - they're still the best boots I've had. Would I buy them new knowing what I know now? Can't say for sure, but I would certainly consider them. At this point though, I'm not sure they will ever need replacing.

thanks for the feedback both of you..

Do your feet sweat in the boots?

are the comfortable to walk in? (no sloppy fit, moving around)

if you have worn them in cold weather, +20 degrees (which i realize is balmy for some ppl on TBN), did your feet stay warm?

Are yours insulated?

I bought a pair of Muck Arctic Sport boots last year, and they are a far cry from the old rubber boots you and I remember. They are easy on-easy off, fairly warm (I used them stand hunting in 20 degree weather, and plowed snow for an hour in 0 degree weather),and ok to walk in-3/4 of a mile to a tree stand was fine. I think they are well worth the price.

wow - those are quite expensive (retail on the pair i looked at was $269).. BUT for lasting you 10 yrs, you got more than your $15 worth LOL

Mallwart has a pair called Alaskatuff. The sole and bottom are a chinese knockoff of the bfgoodrich extratuff boot which are mandatory foot gear for coastal alaska. But these Alaskatuffs have the neophrene uppers and some insulation in the lowers. They wouldn't hold up to commercial fishing but are great for not so cold weather mucking around. Ez on and off but don't have the tight ankle fit like the real extratuffs so I wouldn't want to hike in them very far but great for being out in the skiff or on a stand??(never been in one) all day.

You are quite welcome ....

Do your feet sweat in the boots?
LOL .... my feet sweat just about everywhere .... including when lounging around the house and wearing socks with no shoes .... heck I think they might even sweat when I'm going barefoot ....

I find the Chore Boots to be great to walk around in - they fit my foot very well (except for my high arches, they don't slide around, etc ...... .

if you have worn them in cold weather, +20 degrees (which i realize is balmy for some ppl on TBN), did your feet stay warm?
Yup - as much as my feet stay warm .... I have fairly poor circulation in my hands and feet, so it's normal for my feet/hands to get somewhat cold - if it is at all cold out ....

That said, they keep my feet from freezin' ....

Are yours insulated?
I believe that you could say that they are ....

You can read more about them here:

Mine are the Chore, Hi's

BTW, the Tractor Supply's here locally carry them ....

I got a pair of those bfg's when I worked on a factory trawler out of Dutch ..... some of the best boots I've worn .... really loved 'em ....

Unfortunately they had just a little too much smell left from all the cod guts .... so naturally I kept them out in the garage ..... and the wife snagged 'em when I wasn't looking and gave them the heave-ho .... :(

My feet sweat regardless too. Thin socks on first, then heavy helps wick away sweat. My boots are fairly warm and truly waterproof so far. They are pretty comfortable to wear all day and the zipper makes removal very easy. They basically are rubber outer shell, kinda like a wetsuit insulation and leather on the inside. I'd say that would make them a fairly warm boot compared to most any. Main drawback - they just are'nt a very handsome boot. Especially wearing them with your pants legs sticking in them, which if you are crossing creeks, etc. only makes sense.
