Anyone use a 3-point log splitter with their GC 2300,2400,2600.

Seems the 1920psig @ 6.9 GPM will be abysmal.

Anyone have success with PTO driven log splitters?

Which models?

Anything reasonably priced?

TIA

I put a used one onto my TAFE 35, which is a clone of a Massey 231. It runs slowly with the small pump, but I can get a lot of wood split with it. Big maple rounds I hang over the splitter on a chain below my Massey 35's loader. It breaks them up o.k.

At $500 CDN I think the used 3 pt hitch splitter was good value. One hose needed replacing at $35. but it works well and doesn't seem hard on itself. It is a Mennonite-made product from Central Ontario, I think.

Must be a Wallenstien, mine works great too.

I just recently used a neighbors home made PTO driven splitter. Let me qualify by saying it's the first splitter of any kind I have used so I cannot "compare" it to anything. This setup did have a PTO issue, but not the fault of the splitter. Frankly I really liked the setup. His had what seemed like a 6" cylinder and I'm guessing a 2" piston.

Cannot guess what the tonnage was. Pro's are the unit was solidly mounted to the tractor and wasn't going anywhere. It was stable on uneven ground. If need be you could haul it into the back forty to split, without having to worry about trailering a towbehind model. It had plenty of power on tap and never stalled the motor, but as I mentioned this one had PTO issues so the PTO itself stopped (again, NOT the fault of splitter)

cons are it was mounted to the tractor and couldn't go anywhere, anywhere the tractor couldn't go that is. The tractor had to run to power it and that adds hrs to your tractor.

The specs that I seen on the GC2400 were only 6.3 GPM NOT 6.9.

But either way I think it is going to be slower than you want.

If the 3PH splitter had a 4" x 24" cylinder with a 2" rod, It would take 12.4 seconds to extend and 9.3 to retract. Giving a total cycle time of 21.7 seconds. And with only 1920psi, you are only looking at 12 tons of force.

I don't think I would be happy with those specs.

There are a lot of good stand alone units like the huskee's from TSC, troybuilts i think at home depot, etc. Most of those are labeled as 22ton units and have the same 4" x 24" cylinder but with an 11GPM 2 stage pump. That would give cycle times of 7.1 to extend and 5.1 to retract. Total of about 12.4 seconds. And these splitters can be had for ~$1000, which isn't much more than a 3PH unit.

But If you must have a 3PH unit, I would go with one that has its own pump. But I think they are usually more expensive than the stand alones and dont even have their own motor to power them. I don't know of any good ones or what to look for in them either.
