How big are the small trees? Ken Sweet

Ken asks a key question. Less than two inches and most any tractor with appropriately sized rotary cutter (brush hog) will handle it. Up to three inches is possible with medium duty brush hog and upwards of 35hp tractor. Over three inches and you are talking tree removal rather than mowing. Tree removal can be done a number of ways (contract it out, back hoe, chainsaw plus stump removal or grinding or just rotting, or grapple plus strong FEL and good size tractor to name some common options. Grapple techniques won't work with trees over about five or six inches max.

So, as Ken asks, what size and how many and what type of tree and slope/access etc?

Also are you going to be doing your own hay?

O.K:cool: let me start with a more complete dicription of what im up against. the pasture is fairly clear except for weeds(handle those later) the forest is five years of over grown brush and trees. every size known to man. plenty of spots that will need to be filled with dirt and rocks due to erosion making hay get from field to barn. every thing that it would take to turn a small forest into a fram. im retired and plan to be here in Gods country till the end so im lookingfor a tractor that will out last me (im 63) needs to handle a tractor freak

Sounds like a 35 or 40 hp tractor and loader with a 6 ft brush hog with slip clutch to cut saplings less than 2 inches. Maybe Cut the bigger ones off with a chain saw flush with the ground and drag and pile them to burn. Ken Sweet

I agree with Ken. You might want to think about a 35-40 hp tractor with a strong loader and universal quick attach on the FEL. I see a grapple may be in your future with all that land clearing but as Ken noted, start with a good 6ft rotary mower.

There are weeks of reading on TBN regarding selection criteria and brand recommendations. Read before you start looking for a dealer. Also, assess how much tractor maintenance you expect to do yourself as that might limit your choices depending on local dealerships. Don't worry so much about parts for the common tractors you see discussed here as UPS has revolutionized that issue. My dealer is six hundred miles away and parts arrive after a phonecall and a day or two. Ken is a good example of a virtual implement dealer who can ship most implements at a great price and can give detailed advice via phone or TBN.

Happy hunting.

That is great. I never thought of that one. I think I may have just been upgraded in status. I like the sound of it anyway. :D Ken Sweet
